The rising of happiness
A trip to Sukhothai is a must for anyone interested in the origins of the Thai empire, which began in this city in the 13th century. Widely considered the seat of Thailand's golden age, Sukhothai was the country's capital for around 140 years and served as home to countless monarchs. Nowadays the ruins of the city show weathered stupas, time-worn Buddha statues, and nearly 200 temples, all surrounding serene waters filled with colorful lillies. Modern-day Sukhothai lies 12 km (7.45 mi) from the old city and serves as a good base to visit the historical site. Where to stay in Sukhothai

Sukhothai tourism has been growing for decades, meaning you can now find many places to stay around town, even on a budget. Most accommodations are in New Sukhothai, which lies 12 km (7.45 mi) from the historical park, but lacks many interesting sights of its own. However, good transport connections between the two cities make it easy to explore the historical city on a day trip. If you have a bit more in your budget, save yourself some traveling time by staying near the old city. Do your homework before you book, though--some of the older hotels have a reputation for being run-down and not particularly clean.
