Visit the first temple of Chiang Mai at Wat Chiang Man, where King Mengrai once lived in the 14th century. The attraction consists of meditation halls, gold-topped structures, and old Buddhist decorations. Inside the largest hall, look for the oldest Buddha image in the city, a statue holding a begging bowl. The smaller meditation hall hosts the crystal and marble Buddhas. Walk around the temple grounds to find the Chedi Chang Lom, a structure surrounded by stone elephants. Definitely a must-see whilst in Chiang Mai. Quite easy to get to and there are loads of Tuk Tuks around there if you prefer travelling around the temple (and maybe the rest of the city) with a guide! more »

Beautiful picturesque spiritual place. There was a lot to see and a lot of space to explore and all for free! The elephant statues are cool and apparently there is a very ancient Buddha statue which is also free to see.

Stunning to look at, calm and tranquil. Early evening it’s quiet with hardly any tourists and if your lucky you can see the tiny bats flying from tree to tree. By far my favourite Wat in chaing Mai sit and take in the positive energy

Very nice and quiet temple with a lot of benches to rest. I feel relaxed just sitting under the tree and looking at the Temples.

The chedi with elephants base is the main attraction. The place is spacious. The all important crystal buddha is inside a double bar enclosure. Very difficult to take photo. There are also relics inside the temple.

Wat Chiang Man is near where we stayed in Chiang Mai and is hence the first temple we visited. It is a great temple indeed - I was amazed by the stone Elephant Chedi. Most Thailand temples are decorated with golden color and the reflection in a hot summer day is especially attractive. The Elephant Chedi is the oldest part of the temple and was the first one being built on the temple complex. The temple itself was the very first one in the Chiang Mai old town around 1296 AD. A must visit for any visitors. Free entry and need sarong if entering the halls.
