Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum and Walking Trail, Sai Yok

See an important reminder of World War II at Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum and Walking Trail, commemorating part of the route of the Burma Railway. Known also as the "Death Railway," the line was constructed by POWs held by Japanese forces, along with Asian slave-laborers. This particular section was cut through solid rock by Allied prisoners and slaves working under treacherous conditions, with little rest or food. Now a museum, the site allows you to walk through the valley and learn about this tragic period in human history, with a range of exhibits and touching memorials to those that suffered here. Where to stay in Sai Yok

A few dozen hotels remain scattered throughout the mountains and jungle in Sai Yok. Although luxurious resorts are more numerous, a few quality backpacker-friendly places have popped up recently. Look for accommodations inside the national park or near popular Sai Yok places to visit, and ask the hotel staff about organizing tours of the area. The hotel tour rates tend to be better than prices charged by tour guides, who frequently offer unsolicited services.
