Temple on the Hill (Wat Phra That Mae Yen), Pai
(3.8/5 based on 320+ reviews on the web)
Climb, bike, or drive up to Temple on the Hill (Wat Phra That Mae Yen), an old temple of unknown origin looking out on mountains, valleys, and rice fields. If trekking up the 353 steps doesn't appeal, take the road to the hilltop by bicycle or car. The temple complex includes two buildings as well as a few diminutive golden chedis. A graceful white Buddha greets you, along with some smaller, colorful statues. Pack water and a hat if you're opting to hike or cycle. With our international travel planner, Pai attractions like Temple on the Hill (Wat Phra That Mae Yen) can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • We had a great scenic walk up from Pai along the river. The steps are a good challenge and all worth it when you reach the top for brilliant views. Nice Buddha statue at the top.
  • Spectacular views of all in the Valley at the end of the stairs that lead up to the white Buddha. The temple... one more. But above all that not you cheat to pay a taxi to there since this very close of Pai and is can go walking without problem.

  • After walking up the unfinished infinity steps with the sun's excruciating heat, we come to find that the view is less than ordinary. Once you've reached the top, you're signaled to remove your shoes and flip flops- so we complied and walked into debris and an under-kept site. We also stumbled into the Big White Buddha getting his yearly facelift (photo for the grand effect).
  • Basically nothing up there but the mighty white Buddha. View is spectacular. Sitting there waiting for sunset calms u..
  • The main reason you go here is clearly not the small temple but the giant white Buddha built on a platform on the mountain and the breathtaking view over Pai and the whole valley. A must visit in Pai!
  • If you make your way to Pai, you need to go up the mountain to where the white Buddha sits. The view is spectacular, and the tranquil atmosphere will leave you breathless (as well as the stairs)
  • This is an essential destination when visiting Pai. The white Buddha is simply breathtaking. A perfect place to visit early in the morning to get some peaceful meditation in. Breathtaking views! Bring some water, the steps can be a little taxing on a hot day.
