Temple on the Hill (Wat Phra That Mae Yen), Pai

3.9
#1 of 8 in Historic Sites in Mae Hong Son Province
Climb, bike, or drive up to Temple on the Hill (Wat Phra That Mae Yen), an old temple of unknown origin looking out on mountains, valleys, and rice fields. If trekking up the 353 steps doesn't appeal, take the road to the hilltop by bicycle or car. The temple complex includes two buildings as well as a few diminutive golden chedis. A graceful white Buddha greets you, along with some smaller, colorful statues. Pack water and a hat if you're opting to hike or cycle. • If you have seen other Buddha of this mountain has nothing special. Right if you pass in the area and don't have other programs. Like everything in Pai é stra overrated.

  • You can see how far up the hill this is from the centre of Pai so it's not surprise it's a pretty windy drive and a trek up some steep steps to the top. Wonderful views of the valley and mountains for...  more »

  • Very cozy place, so peaceful and besides there is stunning view at sunset and during the day. Don't forget to take off your shoes once you on top and place leave some tips for temple maintains into the safe placed near Buddha. Thank you and have a good one!
  • Went there in November 2016 and some parts were still under construction. Nice little walk up to the top. Beautiful view once you're up there. Food amd drinks sold at the bottom next to car park.
  • A Peace Wat You can view Pai landscape here, But there are some trees obstructing the landscape view, landscape view is better at YunLai viewpoint. By the way, you could drive your bike up to the top if you do not wish the climb up the stairs
  • Nice little climb to get an amazing view over the area. Ow and there is a giant white buddha.
  • Cool view of Pai from the top. Currently the Buddha statue is full of scaffolding now.

Where to stay in Pai

With tourism now the number-one industry in the area, you shouldn't have any trouble finding accommodations in Pai. In fact, on a walk through the village center you'll be hard-pressed to find a street that doesn't have several hotels or guesthouses. The village's popularity among backpackers means you can choose from a range of hostels and budget guesthouses. Luxury accommodations are more limited, although with a host of excellent mid-range options you can stay in comfort without spending big bucks. When Pai is at its busiest, between November and March, try something on the fringes of the village for a quieter, more peaceful holiday.
