Bua Thong Waterfalls (Nam Phu Chet Si), Mae Taeng

Situated just an hour’s drive from the city, Bua Thong Waterfalls (Nam Phu Chet Si) showcases a natural limestone waterfall, renowned for its visually appealing and unusual aesthetics, particularly the way sunlight dapples and splits in the area, creating awe-inspiring rainbows. The spot contains quite a few convenient and beginner-friendly climbing spots, thanks to the mineral coating which makes the surface surprisingly non-slippery. Be sure to ask locals, or do your own research on how to get here beforehand, as there there’s not a lot of signs marking the route to the waterfall. Be sure to bring towels, as you'll likely get wet. Bua Thong Waterfalls (Nam Phu Chet Si) is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Mae Taeng Edition.

  • Hidden treasure of this area! It took us one hour to get from Chiang Mai to the Bua Tong Waterfalls but it was most certainly worth it. Make sure you ask on Facebook if other people want to share a cab, or use Grab. When you ask nicely, the cab/Grab drivers will wait for you until you are finished. Also, please be careful! The view is great but you must mind your step during this visit for sometimes it can be slippery.

  • We rode in a red taxi truck here with some other travellers we met and split the fare between us. You could also ride up here on a scooter but as it's over an hour out of Chiang Mai you'd want to be a confident driver. This is a very chill and relaxing spot to spend a morning. Go early if you can to avoid the larger tourist groups. These waterfalls are really unique and it's really fun to walk up and down through the flowing water!
  • Quite far away from Chiang Mai but worth it, especially on a hot day. The waterfalls are good fun and pretty. There's food stands and nice toilets! I don't even think you have to pay (well we didn't)
  • This waterfall is certainly worth a visit. It is a one hour drive from the city, but you can easily enjoy the site for a multiple hours. At the top of the waterfall you can enjoy the view. Walk down the staircase and climb up the waterfall. Be carefull though, because some places can be slippery.
