Long Neck Village, Mae Hong Son

At Long Neck Village, get a sense of traditional village life and understand the women's practice of lengthening their necks with brass coils. Once a dying custom, the practice has become more frequent due to money it draws from tourism, regardless of the controversy. In Mae Hong, several villages open their doors to curious tourists, with the most popular being Huai Seua Thao. During your visit, expect difficulty in communicating with locals due to the language barrier; nevertheless, they are generally friendly and welcoming. The women will encourage you to purchase handicrafts like hand-woven linens, but note that bartering is frowned upon. Photographs are okay, although many tourists feel uncomfortable with the idea. Inspirock's itinerary builder makes planning a Mae Hong Son trip simple and quick.

  • I'm still not sure what to think of the long leak village. I personally found it very leg printing despite the many stalls. Admission is relatively high, although this actually benefits who is not very clear... There are many stalls with numerous souvenirs, some of them are even made (such as scarf, bracelets). The sales actually benefit from this minority. I.e. Please don't complain, but buy the best a scarf to 200-300THB. The ladies working on 1 scarf incredible for 3 days! The best ever with a guide there, so can you can ask many question.

Where to stay in Mae Hong Son

Though Mae Hong Son generally lacks accommodations that are anything other than functional, you can expect to find acceptable lodgings here--especially if you're a budget-conscious backpacker. These mostly come in the form of clean, no-frills rooms in guesthouses or hostels. Be prepared for prices to fluctuate, rising during the popular season (between November and January). If you're able and willing to spend a little more, explore the more upscale midrange options on the outskirts of the town center.
