Long Neck Village, Mae Hong Son
(1/5 based on 320+ reviews on the web)
At Long Neck Village, get a sense of traditional village life and understand the women's practice of lengthening their necks with brass coils. Once a dying custom, the practice has become more frequent due to money it draws from tourism, regardless of the controversy. In Mae Hong, several villages open their doors to curious tourists, with the most popular being Huai Seua Thao. During your visit, expect difficulty in communicating with locals due to the language barrier; nevertheless, they are generally friendly and welcoming. The women will encourage you to purchase handicrafts like hand-woven linens, but note that bartering is frowned upon. Photographs are okay, although many tourists feel uncomfortable with the idea. • I can't believe at almost 65, brought up at the tough end of town, I have just been party to the biggest con in Thailand. (The village of the long neck people) It is not remote it is off a busy road j...  more »
  • Well, write here. Commercialism. Price for admission as Thailand very high. Girls come out there like to work. A kind of open-air museum. Clean, lots of expensive souvenirs. This is not a real village. Is it worth seeing? Try and judge for themselves. It is worth to get there on your own Scooter, so as not to incur additional costs from the Office.

  • Of course we wonder to go there or not. We went on a boat long tail in this picturesque village. "The women" Long neck "offer a local crafts (made on-site) and allow themselves to be photographed very kindly. The village lives normally, we see the school (good level of mathematics in the books at least!), the bar, the two Catholic churches... When we were there there was an office and several women attended this office, some wearing their rings, others not. They are refugees not allowed to work, so tourism helps them live.
