Long Neck Village, Mae Hong Son

1.0
#9 of 23 in Things to do in Mae Hong Son
At Long Neck Village, get a sense of traditional village life and understand the women's practice of lengthening their necks with brass coils. Once a dying custom, the practice has become more frequent due to money it draws from tourism, regardless of the controversy. In Mae Hong, several villages open their doors to curious tourists, with the most popular being Huai Seua Thao. During your visit, expect difficulty in communicating with locals due to the language barrier; nevertheless, they are generally friendly and welcoming. The women will encourage you to purchase handicrafts like hand-woven linens, but note that bartering is frowned upon. Photographs are okay, although many tourists feel uncomfortable with the idea. To pay his fee of 250 baht before entering the actual Boulevard. Then countless stalls are strung over a distance of 100 m. All have the same range of selected factory goods. The longneck women sit right and left and commit for photos in the correct position. 25 years ago, the whole village was full of them. Now I have counted three "real Longnecks". The next generation is the neck rings as jewelry. In longneck, they are probably no longer interested. Overall all very commercially and the photos made with a gravel-feeling, are bought.

Where to stay in Mae Hong Son

Though Mae Hong Son generally lacks accommodations that are anything other than functional, you can expect to find acceptable lodgings here--especially if you're a budget-conscious backpacker. These mostly come in the form of clean, no-frills rooms in guesthouses or hostels. Be prepared for prices to fluctuate, rising during the popular season (between November and January). If you're able and willing to spend a little more, explore the more upscale midrange options on the outskirts of the town center.
