Wat Khunaram (Mummified Monk), Ko Samui

Stop by Wat Khunaram (Mummified Monk) to see the mummified body of Luang Pho Daeng, a prominent monk who died in 1973 while meditating. The monk's remains serve as an important reminder of the transience of human nature. One of the more unusual historical attractions available in the area, the temple draws foreign visitors interested in learning more about Buddhism. Instead of selling conventional souvenirs, the onsite shop takes a more holistic and spiritual approach, stocking goods such as holy water, coconut oil, and natural soaps. • This temple, which is revered in Koh Samui, is located at the roadside 4169 Ring South Road, between Na Muang and Hua Thanon. It is visible from the road and has a very convenient parking. This temple has beautiful Wat, pavilions in the Sukhothai style, with their polychrome decorations, sloping roofs at several levels and the very elegant "Chofa", egrets that extend the edges of the roofs to the sky. Thais call them translated "PomPoms of heaven"! The grand Pavilion, which houses the glass cage where the mummified body of the monk, Luong Pordaeng, is presented is on the right. It is sheltered by an imposing chapel where is reached by a staircase, after getting there. The monk is sitting and his absent eyes hidden by sunglasses. The State of preservation of the body is exceptional, strange and almost unreal, for some Europeans. For the thais, the preservation of the body is a belief that reinforces the precepts of Buddhism and encourage them to follow. Death is a step toward other lives, including reincarnation. My Thai friends, who accompanied me, were very collected, and their usual, have made donations. This temple, like most in Thailand, is a school for young monks. It gives life to these buildings.
