Wat Khao Takiap, Hua Hin

3.6
#3 of 14 in Historic Sites in Hua Hin
Climb Chopsticks Hill to the Buddhist temple of Wat Khao Takiap and enjoy fantastic views of the Gulf of Thailand and Hua Hin Beach. On your way up the fairly easy climb you'll find yourself accompanied by handfuls of monkeys (hence the attraction's nickname, the Monkey Temple). Feeding the creatures is okay, but beware of aggressiveness when the food runs out. Also stash away shiny items like sunglasses or anything in wrapping paper, or the monkeys may try to take it. Remember to dress appropriately and cover your knees and shoulders before visiting the temple. • The temple is not the best but the setting is great. The big thing here are the monkeys who wander around.. They are cheeky so be careful because they will nick your ice cream when you're not looking!...  more »

  • We have popped in here a few times, purely as my son loves the monkeys - beware they will take any food you may bring them !! Drinks are cheap here , and the food you can buy for the monkeys is cheap too ! The temple is fantastic with views all round
  • Wat Khao Tao Takiab Temple Whilst here, it is worth seeing the large temple complex in Khao Tao. Contained within it are several caves with a multitude of Buddha statues and shrines. There are also a couple of impressive look - out points, a fishing village and freshwater lake. There is still a lot of work being done to this temple and many of the parts are still in concrete stage as at June 2010 when I was there. A 272 metres high hill home to Wat Khow Takiab or some call Wat Khao Lad - Khao Takiab can be written several ways in English: Khao Takiab, Kao Takiab, Khao Takiap, Kao Takiap, Takiep, Takieb, and so on. The one that follows Thai closest is Khao Takiab. The name itself actually means Chopstick Hill. Khao Takiab Beach is the south end of the long Hua Hin main beach. Just beyond Khao Takiab is delightful Takiab Bay, the long and wide beach stretches from Khao Takiab south to Suan Son beach and khao Tao Beach. I went back in 2015 and visited this Temple again. Not a great deal had changed, however to the left of the main steps is a drive down to a Chinese type temple area. Down the ramp were a vast number of monkeys far more than I remembered in my previous visit in 2010. One of the temple helpers, an old Thai lady fed them and it was a bit scary seeing all these crazy monkeys scampering for food. When one started running it was as though it was a signal for all the others to start running for food. Do not approach these monkeys here they are not safe, and do not put anything valuable on the ground or leave anything unattended, for it will surely be stolen by these monkeys. The area at the bottom was a great view but the temple area and buildings were a bit disappointing but it was worth the visit down to this part of this Temple which I had missed on my trip in 2010. A few shops are scattered about here but none are worth shopping in anymore. Catering more for tacky gifts but great if you like that kind of thing. The views are the main interest here, especially from the top of the main Temple, but the climb up is hard going especially in the fierce heat that day I went, it was close to 41 degrees centigrade. I have to admit the amount of monkeys here now has become a real pest and spoiled it for me.
  • Worth a visit, don’t forget to pay respects to the monks and offer a few baht to the donation boxes or buy some trinkets from the monks also..
  • Very nice temple very good views from the top watch out for the monkey they was fine on our visit. .
  • Beautiful place to visit. Monkeys were not afraid of people, and view from the Hill was breathtaking :)
