Khao Sam Muk, Chonburi

(3.6/5 based on 100+ reviews on the web)
Khao Sam Muk, is a 45 m high hill in Chonburi Province, Thailand. It is located in Chonburi city right by the seashore of Bangkok Bay between Ang Sila and Bang Saen Beach. There is a Chinese shrine on the hill-top which affords views of the surrounding landscape, including Bang Saen Beach, and there is another shrine at the foot of the escarpment. There are many wild rhesus monkeys living in the bush on the sides of the hill. There are also cactus gardens on the hilltop and many restaurants below along the road flanking the shoreline. A tall white building on the southern side right by the hill is a blot on the panoramic view of Khao Sam Muk.Legends and symbolismKhao Sam Muk has symbolic significance in Chonburi. Local people believe that the spirit of that mountain protects the fishermen from harm. One legend tells that the wife of a fisherman waited on the hill for her husband who was lost at sea. Another legend tells that in the 18th century a poor Chinese girl named Sam Muk jumped to her death from the cliff after her parents objected to her marriage to her lover, becoming deified after her death. In some versions both the girl and her lover threw themselves from the escarpment. Sam Muk hill appears in somewhat stylized form in the provincial seal of Chonburi.

  • Here come feed the monkeys that they all make me dizzy with pleasure in huge quantities from the trees. The local also did not miss an opportunity to make some money and you can always buy a bunch of bananas for feeding of monkeys. Like the friendly and timid but not particularly better nourish affection. Wild animals, though in the city!

  • In principle, it is possible to visit. Especially if you have not seen the monkeys. There are a lot of them. And they're not so arrogant as to same Obez'janem island. Here they are more calm and even timid. Besides them there are constantly harass the local dogs. And so, on the whole, the place is beautiful. There is an observation deck. If the Guide turns out to be a good (as we have) he will tell an interesting story about this place.
