Golden Triangle, Chiang Saen

3.2
#2 of 8 in Things to do in Chiang Saen
Discover the darker side of Thailand at Golden Triangle, the historic center of the country's opium trade. From the 1960s until the 1990s, this area produced most of the world's opium supply. Cleaned up and free of drug trade, this is now a favorite place for tourists to visit and learn about former opium production and smuggling. Located in the northern section of Thailand, this area is also home to indigenous tribes, archeological ruins, and scenic nature. To get the most out of your time here, consider a guided tour. Make Golden Triangle a centerpiece of your Chiang Saen vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Chiang Saen trip planner .

  • After the visit to the opium museum we summarize the walk to the view along a rather long concrete staircase. After this staircase another 150 metres along the steep road to the panoramic view of the three country point. Though an effort but certainly bother to do these. View of Laos and Myanmar it gives a special feeling.

  • Sincerely Thailand has so many so beautiful and interesting places to visit, the three countries border is nothing spectacular. We visited it on a trip from Chiang Mai, passing through the White Temple of Chiang Rai. Sicer is too much travel and I do not think that it is worthwhile. You cross a boat to Laos (prior to leaving the passport of the Thai side that return you it back). Laos side you can only see a kind of 'free shop' with the same imitation you see everywhere. They give you half an hour to go and come back to Thailand. Honestly, I do not recommend going.

  • Took the boat ride which was ok . The views of the surrounding land of Myanmar/Laos/Thailand is quite scenic especially on a sunny blue sky day. The boat ride includes a 30 mins stop at Laos , which i...  more »

  • Quiet, clean, NOT cramped! Rooms are generously sized, excellent beds, great AirCon. Systems. Pool is one of the best yet. Impressive restaurant. And of course the ever-present staff who are typical of the gentle, smiling Thais.
  • Very good location, clean rooms, friendly staff.
  • I have gone to the Imperial Golden Triangle Resort since it was opened its services to public. The hotel is at very good location which generates the stunning atmosphere from the live picture of the joining borders of three countries (Laos PDR, Myanmar,Thailand) that can be seen from it restaurant's balcony.
  • Set in a fabulous location. Good rooms, food and service.
  • Nice view and good service, it's open for decades, so facilities is quite old. You can see Golden Triangle and Casino from your terrace. Room is very large. Staffs is smile and nice :)

Where to stay in Chiang Saen

While there are limited options in Chiang Saen for places to stay, head north up the Mekong River to the more touristic Sop Ruak (Golden Triangle) for a range of accommodations to suit your needs. Shoestring travelers can choose from conveniently located, budget-friendly accommodations with free Wi-Fi. If your pockets are deeper, explore upscale options in tranquil settings with excellent views toward Laos and Myanmar. As for midrange lodgings in the Golden Triangle, sizeable rooms and busy, popular resorts come with themed party nights and tour guides.
