Golden Triangle, Chiang Saen
(2.2/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
Discover the darker side of Thailand at Golden Triangle, the historic center of the country's opium trade. From the 1960s until the 1990s, this area produced most of the world's opium supply. Cleaned up and free of drug trade, this is now a favorite place for tourists to visit and learn about former opium production and smuggling. Located in the northern section of Thailand, this area is also home to indigenous tribes, archeological ruins, and scenic nature. To get the most out of your time here, consider a guided tour. Our Chiang Saen trip itinerary maker makes visiting Golden Triangle and other Chiang Saen attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • I had good feeling to visit this area, knowing that in the past people in this area were depended on Opium trade and now they earn money from tourism industry because of wisdom and policy of their kin...  more »
  • Visit more for show. Nothing supernatural don't expect from this place. Just a bend in the River with 3 States. Recommendations: 1. Read in advance about the history of opium in this place. Where you came from-and why. 2. Be sure to visit the Museum of opium (description in English). In the shop at the Museum interesting themed magnets. 3. For travel by boat on Mekong take passport. 4. Ask your guide about the possibility of short tours to Myanmar (there are still thriving) 5. If you're without a guide, it is better to go to the nearby town of Chiang Saen and see Wat Pa Sak. He really ancient and recalled Wat Anghor (slightly)
