Golden Triangle, Chiang Saen

#2 of 11 in Things to do in Chiang Saen
Discover the darker side of Thailand at Golden Triangle, the historic center of the country's opium trade. From the 1960s until the 1990s, this area produced most of the world's opium supply. Cleaned up and free of drug trade, this is now a favorite place for tourists to visit and learn about former opium production and smuggling. Located in the northern section of Thailand, this area is also home to indigenous tribes, archeological ruins, and scenic nature. To get the most out of your time here, consider a guided tour. • One of the places to see when you are in Chiang Rai - in fact many coaches come from Chiang Mai. We came here as part of our private tour with Chai Machete Tours. We seemed to avoid most of the crowds...  more »
  • The border is impressive - not in the western style, but seeing the hustle and bustle of the locals going over the border into Myanmar. On the Thai side, market stalls galore and well worth exploring....  more »
  • I took a day trip form Chiang Rai and enjoyed my visit to this historic place. Took boat ride to Laos side as well. Boat cost 300 bhat and 30 Bhat for entry pass to Laos. They asked for passports but ...  more »

  • From here you can view the sand dune form by the river flow call Golden Triangle. In the 70s only few street vendor and Thai restaurant by the river bank providing visitor with delicious cheap food. Due to increasingly in flood of foreign and China visitors. Today it had been developed into a park.
  • It's been made into another tourist attraction, filled with markets where you can buy T Shirts etc. The boat trip just takes you to a market style Mall for 40 mins in Laos, where the only local product is Snake Whisky (cheap cigarettes too). Then they have Nike trainers, T-shirts, backpacks and many other non-traditional products. I am happy I came but all sense of tradition has been lost here (2.5 stars).
  • While its peaceful, untouched landscape has more recently become a draw for visitors, the Golden Triangle – a term coined by the CIA – gained notoriety in the 1920s as one of the world's most prolific opium producers, until it was eclipsed by Afghanistan. In an effort to stamp out the drug trade, the Thai government made poppy-growing illegal in 1959 and brought in crop-substitution programmes for farmers. Opium production was cut considerably, but there are concerns it is rising again in remote pockets across the border in Burma and Laos.
  • Interesting place along Mekong river where you can see Myanmar on the left and Laos on the right. A lot of souvenir shops. If you go up the temple, you'll see some ruins. Although not as grand compared to others, it's still worth the climb.
  • The golden triangle at first didn't seem interesting. But then when you realize your at the exact location where three countries meet, your glad you had the opportunity to see it. As seen in the picture from where we are, we are in Thailand, the sharp pointed land in front of us is Myanmar, to the right is Laos, and far deep in the distance you can see.mountain of China. Very cool!!
