Wat Rong Khun (The White Temple), Chiang Rai

(4,800+ reviews on the web)
Religious Site Tourist Spot
Take in the striking white angles and contours of Wat Rong Khun (The White Temple), a Buddhist temple cum art exhibit. The temple that once stood on the site was in a state of dilapidation, with no funds towards its refurbishment; artist Chalermchai Kositpipat decided to entirely rebuild the structure with his own money, opening it to visitors in 1997. The contemporary and unusual style of the buildings surprises and engages, while the using of modern, western motifs in murals--Michael Jackson, Superman, and Mickey Mouse all make appearances--raises interesting questions about the globalized world. Plan to see Wat Rong Khun (The White Temple) and other attractions that appeal to you using our Chiang Rai tour planner.

  • We stayed in central Chiang Rai and went to the White Temple by tuk-tuk. This cost us 300 baht for the half-hour trip there and back with the driver waiting for us for an hour. This is sufficient time...  more »
  • The White Temple was pretty amazing. I think it's a bit hyped up but sounds like the owner/artist is genuine in making this temple his life's work to share with others. I used the blue Song Thaew truc...  more »

  • If you are a tourist here, this is an absolute must see. Our visit occurred one night just before closing in Oct 2014, at which point the interior was closed to visitors for structural renovations. We enjoyed the intricate design of the exterior immensely, it is beyond description. Have to visit to develop your own appreciation of it's uniqueness. It was unfortunate we couldn't go inside.
  • This temple is beyond words. So I'm just going to leave some recommendations. First remember that they close the temple a few hours so that the monks can eat, but arrive just before that, it will be crowded but wait until the last group enters and then you will enjoy it even more. If you want to go early is as well good. No photos inside so please respect it.
  • Unique temple on the outside and inside. We arrived before 9 and enjoy a moment of peace before the crowds came. There is also a free art exhibition across the temple entrance of the same artist who designed the temple.
  • Such a great place. Feeling so good to Visit here. Feeling so Blessed after Visit here.
  • To have something built in an old style in today's society is a wonderful and respectful experience to those who visit this temple.
