Sop Ruak - the center of the Golden Triangle, Chiang Rai
(2.7/5 based on 400+ reviews on the web)
View three countries from one spot at Sop Ruak - the center of the Golden Triangle, historically known for its opium production but now serving as a major Thailand tourist attraction. The vantage point affords superb views over Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand. Get a better sense of the significance of the area at the extensive opium museum (complete with a small plantation), which educates visitors on the production, effects, and eradication of the drug. Take a boat ride to the Laos-owned island of Don Sao, which does not require a visa, and browse the souvenir shops in the area. Make Sop Ruak - the center of the Golden Triangle part of your personalized Chiang Rai itinerary using our Chiang Rai vacation planner.

  • We reached this area with a bus of the green bus, spending 50 bath each. We left from terminal 1 in chiang rai at 7.20 and we arrived at 8.45. We booked the excursion on the mekong that was a lot of fun, with a stop in laos for a market where we bought the snake liquor, one particular thing. We distributed at 11, always with green bus.

  • The feeling of being on three borders at once is exceptional, but the view itself is quite dissapointing - only the casinos stand out. Would not recommend without a guide.
  • We are located in the border between Thailand, Laos and Myanmar, and the confluence of the Ruak River and Maekong River; the scenery is beautiful and worth a visit. Through a brief series of steps you will reach a small temple of Buddha not really exciting. In the village there is also a large Buddha statue along with a boat decorated seem to put them just for tourists.
