Sop Ruak - the center of the Golden Triangle, Chiang Rai

Categories: Lookouts, Tourist Spots

2.7/5 based on 380 reviews on the web
View three countries from one spot at Sop Ruak - the center of the Golden Triangle, historically known for its opium production but now serving as a major Thailand tourist attraction. The vantage point affords superb views over Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand. Get a better sense of the significance of the area at the extensive opium museum (complete with a small plantation), which educates visitors on the production, effects, and eradication of the drug. Take a boat ride to the Laos-owned island of Don Sao, which does not require a visa, and browse the souvenir shops in the area. • As I think you already read in previous reviews the Golden Triangle is nothing of that. We arrived by scooter from Chiang Rai via a beautiful Road between paddy fields and hills (not the State but the 1271) back to Chiang Rai through the equally beautiful 1149 (mountain road between Burma and Thailand). Those who stay only a few days in Southeast Asia take a trip through the Mekong's but for others wasted time in my opinion.
