Baan Dam Museum, Chiang Rai

3.7
#1 of 8 in Museums in Chiang Rai Province
Part private collection, part public exhibition, Baan Dam Museum belonged to veteran local artist Thawan Duchanee (now deceased). Examine arrangements of Duchanee's artworks, displayed in a vast feast hall, and admire the many finely sculpted wooden buildings on the property, which are works of art unto themselves. Black is both a physical description of the buildings' predominant color scheme, and a symbolic description of the macabre art, which is heavy on animal skulls, skins, sculptures of demons, and racks of antique guns. A unique place. It is the physical expression of one Thai artists vision consisting of many buildings an sculptures spread out over a large shaded compound. Definitely worth a visit. Unfortunately, unlike years ago, you cannot go inside most of the buildings.

Fantastic place. Amazing home. Many wonderful collection of stuff. Stuffing. Plans for at the least 1 hour to enjoy the whole place. Wonderful music from young musicians.

Was raining when we went inside, saw the first house and that's all we see. The rest is closed and not for entry. We braved through the rain just to find out that all are closed. A little heads up from the staffs would be great. Such a disappointment. Don't go on a rainy day unless you want to waste 80baht. Kudos to the artist though, was impressed by the first house.

This is a place of animal death but interesting none the less. The great hall is amazing, however many of the buildings are closed, you can anything peer into windows to see things.
