Baan Dam Museum, Chiang Rai

(1,500+ reviews on the web)
Art Museum
Part private collection, part public exhibition, Baan Dam Museum belonged to veteran local artist Thawan Duchanee (now deceased). Examine arrangements of Duchanee's artworks, displayed in a vast feast hall, and admire the many finely sculpted wooden buildings on the property, which are works of art unto themselves. Black is both a physical description of the buildings' predominant color scheme, and a symbolic description of the macabre art, which is heavy on animal skulls, skins, sculptures of demons, and racks of antique guns. Put Baan Dam Museum on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Chiang Rai trip itinerary planner.

  • The message overall moral is clear: people are wicked. Or it would be most like the supposed artist is wicked / Dark / and evil. This was the worst Exposure of inner demons along with actual Exposure ...  more »
  • Certainly not ugly, the buildings I found very nice to quite nicely. But in more than half, for one reason or another, you can simply not in? The artist also appeals to me not really his style. African influences, up there, but this guy is exactly just go buy up half Africa their mess.

  • I think this place is definitely worth seeing, especially if you're willing to spend money to go to White Temple and stand with the hoards of tourists there. Black House was much quieter and free. It has a darker/creepy vibe, which is kind of cool. There were more bones/furs than most people I know would appreciate, but there are redeeming qualities like incredible architecture and shade. It's best to go early in the morning when it isn't too hot.
  • If you are an art lover you cannot miss out on this place. It is the full package. You get to see and experience a whole world which is the mind of a single artist. It is a place for contemplation and awe. I would recommend not just making pictures, but also really looking around and noticing all the details of this complete little world.
  • Awesome place to visit. It's basically a small village, all buildings are made of wood. Tons of animal skins & skeletons along with boats, drums & weapons. More of a Viking feel. The guy performing with the guitar & harmonica was a beuty, wish I would have grabbed a CD.
  • It's a collection of really old artifacts from the days of viking chiefs to local crocodile 🐊 Hunters. Real crocodile skins.. Huge.. Black.. Skinned and stretched out are a rare sight to see.. Awesome.. Plus a village wooden and black gives a real Gothic ambience and allows one to experience what chieftans from the old days along with their tribes lived like.. Very realistic.. Unique.. I felt I was walking through a village a thousand years ago.. Definitely worth every minute spent here
  • I think i could see more his works closely and clearly. But i have to seeking by myself. And the ticket is 80 baht per person
