Wat Pha Lat, Chiang Mai

4.7
Wat Pha Lat, which means “Monastery at the Sloping Rock”, was originally used as a resting place for people walking up to worship at Doi Suthep. But once the road was built in 1935, making Doi Suthep much more accessible, Wat Pha Lat in turn became a monks’ residence.

The temple complex is incredibly peaceful, beautifully blended in the nature and barely anyone else goes there.

The temple is located on the side of a mountain and borders a large waterfall. Structural elements of the temple are scattered among the trees of the mountainside as small Buddha shrines and images of various mythological creatures.

  • the rise of the markets should help think! They are a bit steep but the visit of the temple is well worth the effort

  • In the direction of Doi Suthep is this temple (for now) quite ignored by tourists. Here, all is quiet. Note of rare European not knowing even when not read (large tank top and ultra short... Even if it's sometimes nice to look at, this is not the place). Put a hand here, a beautiful walk in the Woods, with a pretty waterfall. Superb statues... A real haven of peace and tranquility. Count from 1 to 2 hours of visit. And it's free... Thanks to Jems B for his commentary on the bass notes because of the dogs. Some people dream without doubt a world sanitized without "harmful" other than human. For my part, I fondled at least 3 dogs and none were aggressive. But this is only my opinion and indeed is not necessarily to do.

  • A must place to visit, one of the most relaxing places I’ve ever visited. Spent a good few hours here soaking up the atmosphere. Just please remember to be quiet and respectful when visiting as some people don’t seem to understand it’s a place for reflection and meditation.
  • Highly recommend hiking the monk’s trail and hanging out here with a book or sipping a delicious iced americano made by the monks. This place is peaceful, especially in the early morning, and less touristy than the Wat further up the mountain. A highlight of CM!
  • A nice old little temple on the way to Doi Suthep. You can make a short stop here and enjoy the peace before you get into the tourist traps more upside the hill.
  • The popular route for trail runner (for beginners or for practicing) in Chiang Mai. Just 2 Km trekking to visit the peaceful temple is worth the time.
  • Does not have golden paint or green jade, but has golden sunshine and green leaves! Nestled in lush trees alongside a gurgling stream, this is probably the most tranquil temple around Chang Mai. It’s a steepish walk from the road so keeps crowds away, making it scenic, peaceful and ideal for meditation. I hope it stays almost a “secret” to preserve this peaceful place.
