Wat Chiang Man, Chiang Mai

4.5
#5 of 39 in Historic Sites in Chiang Mai
Architectural Building Religious Site
Visit the first temple of Chiang Mai at Wat Chiang Man, where King Mengrai once lived in the 14th century. The attraction consists of meditation halls, gold-topped structures, and old Buddhist decorations. Inside the largest hall, look for the oldest Buddha image in the city, a statue holding a begging bowl. The smaller meditation hall hosts the crystal and marble Buddhas. Walk around the temple grounds to find the Chedi Chang Lom, a structure surrounded by stone elephants. • This is a nice temple to visit, especially the monument with the elephants. Worth going since it is free :)  more »
  • No other Wat in Thailand compares with Wat Jedi Luang in the center of the Old City. Each time that I visit Chiang Mai, I always visit and marvel at the skills of the ancient builders.  more »

  • Beautiful and historic. The first temple in Chiang Mai. Hardly anyone visiting. Was able to walk the grounds and feel one with the temple.
  • Came here the Sunday after Songkran and they were giving out free drinks, papaya salad, and noodles! Try the purple butterfly pea drink. Find the happy statue with glasses!
  • Personally my favourite temple in Chiang Mai, because it is not so crowded since less tourists come to visit it. The surrounding garden is great to hang out for a while in the shadow :)
  • Quiet and beautiful temple. Beautiful elephant sculptures and gold Buddhas. Definitely worth a stop.
  • Beautiful temple, not as crowded as some others
