Wat Chiang Man, Chiang Mai

Visit the first temple of Chiang Mai at Wat Chiang Man, where King Mengrai once lived in the 14th century. The attraction consists of meditation halls, gold-topped structures, and old Buddhist decorations. Inside the largest hall, look for the oldest Buddha image in the city, a statue holding a begging bowl. The smaller meditation hall hosts the crystal and marble Buddhas. Walk around the temple grounds to find the Chedi Chang Lom, a structure surrounded by stone elephants. Make Wat Chiang Man a centerpiece of your Chiang Mai vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Chiang Mai trip planner .

  • Great complex of temples. On top 5 of Chiang Mai. Well worth the visit, no matter the weather. Make sure to go inside to explore the location.  more »

  • The temple located in the city, with the old, damaged by an earthquake stupa is worth a visit. Note also the big tree at the back in the system. In the old part of Chiang Mai, no House should be higher than this tree. May he live long. for this reason, there is still no high-rise buildings in the old city of Chiang Mai.

  • Beautiful and historic. The first temple in Chiang Mai. Hardly anyone visiting. Was able to walk the grounds and feel one with the temple.
  • Came here the Sunday after Songkran and they were giving out free drinks, papaya salad, and noodles! Try the purple butterfly pea drink. Find the happy statue with glasses!
  • Personally my favourite temple in Chiang Mai, because it is not so crowded since less tourists come to visit it. The surrounding garden is great to hang out for a while in the shadow :)
  • Quiet and beautiful temple. Beautiful elephant sculptures and gold Buddhas. Definitely worth a stop.
  • Free entrance and totally worth a visit. I believed this is the oldest temple in Chiangmai area and it's no worse than other temple that charge entrance free. Also I believe this temple is very dog friendly... a lot of stray dogs live here and they have a little temple that kept four babies dog safe .... so cute!!!!

Where to stay in Chiang Mai

While visiting Chiang Mai, keep in mind that the old town district and the area surrounding the famous night market offer both boutique (relatively expensive) and backpacker (relatively inexpensive) options. The riverside neighborhoods boast exclusive hotels and resorts, where comparatively pricey rooms come with good views and extensive facilities.
