Phuket Big Buddha, Chalong

(4.3/5 based on 9,500+ reviews on the web)
Head up the hillside and stand beneath Phuket Big Buddha, a 45 m (148 ft) statue watching over the surrounding landscape and settlements. Begun only a decade ago as a donation-funded project, the giant structure has come to encapsulate a sense of the spiritual and social character of Phuket. Offering extensive views of the surrounding area--and a peaceful break from the urban bustle--the statue's grounds serve as a popular meeting spot, a revered place of worship, and the endpoint of many hikes. • We took a day out in a taxi from Phuket town and did a variety of things which included the Big Buddha. The structure is very nice and the whole area will look very nice once it is complete, but that is reliant on donations from the public that visit. Great views from the hill. Lots of souvenirs on sale. Not too many steps to walk up. Visited April 2015.
  • Stunning panoramic views from the top and the temple at the top is very special, despite ongoing work there are still prayer services held regularly. There are several large statues of Buddha, the main one being around 45 metres tall, which can be seen from Phuket. The drive up was an adventure and I strongly recommend taking your time when negotiating the blind bends. Parking and entrance to the Big Buddha were free. There is a cafe, a gift shop and a restoration museum for those interested. As you take the steps to reach the top (it's not very strenuous), keep an eye out for the little monkeys! We visited in the mid-afternoon, so it wasn't too hot and we enjoyed the stunning views. Be sure to find the panorama spot just behind the footprint of Buddha.
  • The best place to go when visiting Phuket. Must go early morning; I'd strongly suggest to get there before the sunrise. Gets very crowded during the day. The restoration work on the Buddha is completely finished. You can see families of gibbons running around. If you get lucky, they will climb on your head. The bets place to get close to them in neat Buddha footprint observation point. Scooter ride is easy; watch for turns and take your time. Dress appropriately - pants or long skirts and long sleeved shirts. The view of a bay is magnificent at the sun rise.
  • Beautiful ride up the mountain. Very refreshing and smooth ride. Bit be cautious as some bends ate very sharp. Loved it. Maintenance work was being carried out but still the scenery and the view of the city of Phuket and the bay just awesome. Loved it.
  • Incredible 360° panoramic views. Make sure to have transportation to and from here, as getting a ride to leave can be difficult since many people come on tours. Still under construction inside the Buddha and partially at its base! Must visit!
