Phuket Big Buddha, Chalong

4.4
#1 of 1,060 in Things to do in Phuket
Head up the hillside and stand beneath Phuket Big Buddha, a 45 m (148 ft) statue watching over the surrounding landscape and settlements. Begun only a decade ago as a donation-funded project, the giant structure has come to encapsulate a sense of the spiritual and social character of Phuket. Offering extensive views of the surrounding area--and a peaceful break from the urban bustle--the statue's grounds serve as a popular meeting spot, a revered place of worship, and the endpoint of many hikes. • Awesome time here! The giant Buddha statue which is actually 45 meters high & 26 meters wide is considered the tallest in the world. From the reception area below, you need to walk up a few steps to get to the base of the statue. There you can enjoy a spectacular view of Phuket and the sea down below. Check out the temple below and the souvenir items for sale.
  • Was there 201803 and besides some statues the whole place looked like a construction site. Because it is. Saw some elephants tethered on the way up, no monkeys. Big Buddha himself was impressive all dressed in marble i think it was. There are texts on signs to read if you are interested in the religion and I saw a monk who performed a ritual with some tourists
  • The most surreal experience I've ever had. Indeed,it might not be for everyone, the climb is more than 2 steps and it is quite steep, but if you brave it and reach the top, even those with no religion will feel a sense of accomplishment. Even then, though, there are two levels and for those who do not want to climb, the walkway is wide and flat from the entrance all the way to a magnificent view. The 360 view is magnificent and experiencing the massive Buddah statue in person,as photos do not do it justice,is breathtaking. There are shops with refreshments and interesting information about the statue and the religion behind it all around the area. FREE scarves can be gotten at the entrance as everything from your shoulders to the knees need to be covered as a sign of respect. Photos and videos are allowed and you can even partake in a Buddhist prayer at one of the many shrines. I 100% recommend this for everyone visiting Thailand,if not for experiencing the culture then definitely for the sea view!
  • Amazing!!if you are in Phuket you have to go there!!i think the best time to go is at least one hour before sunset that you can enjoy the view with different colours!!!is beautiful!!we also met the young guy wile they were pray and it was a very nice experience!!just please don’t do like many people there, don’t take them as an attraction because they are there for pray and learn something.try to be discrete at least if you want take a picture of them! Enjoy the big Buddha because is wonderful!!
  • The drive up the mountain was exciting, steep winding roads with dense jungle all around and the occasional glimpse of the sea. When you get to the top, you only see part of the Buddha, creating a sense of expectation as you walk up the stairs. And then you see it, THE Big Buddha. Beautifully made and massive! The platform offers great views of the surrounding jungle and ocean. On your way down, stop by the statue of Dharani Mata.
