Phanom Rung Historical Park (Prasat Hin Phanom Rung), Chaloem Phra Kiat

#1 of 14 in Things to do in Buriram Province
Phanom Rung Historical Park (Prasat Hin Phanom Rung), a Khmer temple complex built in the 10th century, contains largely intact ruins built on the rim of an extinct volcano. When you go, first walk the long processional walkway leading to the main temple, but also look for a pavilion on the right of the walkway where the king once prepared for ceremonies. Once inside the pink sandstone sanctuary, you can admire carvings of Hindu gods and scene depictions from Ramayana. Explore the two libraries as well, where sacred Hindu texts are housed. Despite having been in Siem Reap, I continues to impress this magnificent Khmer Temple from the 10th century - 12th dC. Very different from the Buddhist temples that exist throughout the country, is worth visiting it. The great advantage is that gets very few visitors and you can almost just walk through the ruins.

Get here early to see the sunrise. It's quite spectacular. If you go during the rainy season, it's relatively easy to avoid tourists if you arrive before 10AM... Dry season is probably another story.

A must to see! Historical castle is very well maintained and very beautiful to explore. There are quite some stairs, be careful if you go with elderly.
