Big Buddha, Bophut
(3.6/5 based on 3,800+ reviews on the web)
Pay a visit to a popular and iconic place of worship at Big Buddha. The temple grounds include a gigantic 12 m (39 ft) Buddha statue, visible from several kilometers away, that has become a landmark of the area's skyline and cultural heritage since the temple's founding in 1972. The Buddha sits in the Mara pose, with an upturned left palm in his lap and his right hand resting on his right knee; the Buddha symbolizes calm resolve, having overcoming temptations sent to him by the lord of illusion. Climb the temple steps to stand at the Buddha's feet and admire extensive views of the surrounding coastline. • This Buddhist temple set at the end of a causeway overlooking the sea, is a must see attraction for anyone on the north of Ko Samui. This free to enter temple is a great example of this sort of sittin...  more »
  • very nice décor and then this atmosphere. We did it once in the day and once in the dark. much more enjoyable. It's true that except the Buddha there not much but why not go?

  • The statue itself is beautiful. A nice photo opportunity: very low-flying aircraft over the big Buddha. It is too bad that the temple itself everything shines and is clean and around around are mountains of garbage. Really very run down everything. Rather, you would have required admission, but for granted something.

  • Key Takeaway: Not a must go, but worth it if you have never been to any Thai Buddhist temples (Wats). The attraction itself is relatively small with not much else to see in that area. Within 30 minutes you will be done with the attraction. There are more worthwhile Thai temples (Wats) to visit than this one. However, if you are around the area in Bophut and do not have any other alternatives, you could check this out.
  • Big Buddha is a good place to visit, only need an hour. Make sure to wear appropriate clothing that covers shoulders, you can also get some loaned to you. Lots of cute shops around to spend more time here. Also enjoy the good view from the top. Note: You must take off your shoes for this, walk up the grey tiles, not the red ones, they get so hot in the sun half way up your feet are in pain.
  • Lovely tranquil views from the temple of bells surrounding Big Buddha, we couldn't find any place to buy gold leaf like last time that could be applied to artifacts. Maybe that's a good thing, Big Buddha though is as tranquil as ever. Ladies and gents remember to bring appropriate clothing for a Thai religious site, cover knees and shoulders etc.
  • Giant awkward Buddha, 10/10. On a serious note - nice view, interesting thing, souvenir shops and such. Don't forget to NOT approach Buddha with your shoulders uncovered, of you don't have the clothes there are free to loan to cover up your shameful arms
  • "THE" temple to go on Samui . Take 50 steps up and enjoy a terrfic ocean view next to the huge buddha ...
