Big Buddha, Bophut

Pay a visit to a popular and iconic place of worship at Big Buddha. The temple grounds include a gigantic 12 m (39 ft) Buddha statue, visible from several kilometers away, that has become a landmark of the area's skyline and cultural heritage since the temple's founding in 1972. The Buddha sits in the Mara pose, with an upturned left palm in his lap and his right hand resting on his right knee; the Buddha symbolizes calm resolve, having overcoming temptations sent to him by the lord of illusion. Climb the temple steps to stand at the Buddha's feet and admire extensive views of the surrounding coastline. To visit Big Buddha and other attractions in Bophut, use our Bophut trip planner .

  • The Buddha stature is very beeindurckend and from the Gallery on which it stands is my beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding area. In the system can be a donation in the form of a roof tile, on which you can write his name and this should get lucky. The square before the temple is with many shops very touristsisch, yet I would visit recommend. Expect many other tourists at this sight but...

  • Not being a Buddhist, a place hardly impress. Yes big statue, but even on Samui is not much less. All in classic style-carved dragons, etc. on the balcony there are bells, where they desire and passing clockwise causing them to ring-in legend wish will come true (or find the answer to your question is mauling). To the left of the stairs sits a monk reading mantra that binds a rope at hand. He does it all for donations-necessarily paper bill (a trifle is considered for the dead). If you are a couple, he in turn will help you to find photos.

  • There is some sea statues that are nice to look at. There is a nice selection of stalls to look around and the Buddha itself was nice with great views from the top. There is a little taxi rank on site which makes the return journey or the next part of your journey easier
  • Must see while on Ko Samui. Beautiful area and nice drive to get there from the west side of the island. Lots of vendors and little shops that are nice to stop in. Pancake cart in front of the Big Buddha was amazing!!
  • Nice temple by the sea. Big golden buddah is around 12 meters long Access is free. You must cover yourself before getting inside. Bonus: great views of the bay and you might see some planes landing, the airport is really close to it.
  • While it's not an especially high place being off the main shore a bit the steps take you up to a lovely view of the surrounds with the water looking amazing. There is a dress code and if you forget to adhere to it the local monks will certainly let you know as i saw a few times on my trip. They will help you adhere to the dress code so i wouldn't worry too much unless you plan to visit in a bikini. Definitely worth a visit.
  • If you’re not a big Buddha fan or the weather is not bad, don’t waste your time and stay on the beach. The view is not stunning either.
