Bangkok Protestant Cemetery, Bangkok

4.3
The Bangkok Protestant Cemetery is a cemetery catering mainly to the foreign community in Bangkok. To date, the cemetery has over 1800 interments (around 1100 names are legible on extant gravestones), and it is still accepting burials on a limited basis. The burial register is kept by Christ Church Bangkok (11 Convent Road).
There are also a number of Jewish graves here, since before 1997 there was no other place in the city for the small Jewish community to bury their dead. This changed with the opening of the Jewish Cemetery, in a separate property adjacent to this cemetery.
The Bangkok Protestant Cemetery was founded by a royal land grant given by King Mongkut on 29 July 1853, to address the need for burial space for Bangkok's growing Protestant community.
The cemetery is located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River just south of the Menam Riverside Hotel, and 1.75 km south of the Saphan Taksin BTS station along Charoen Krung Road. It is very close to the Asiatique night market.
Address: Soi 72/5, Charoen Krung Road, Bangkok

  • Visited October 2017, a quiet cemetery, memories of European and American influence in Siam/ Thailand. One grave in particular made an impression, a group of missionaries and their families, all killed in the same road accident. Well worth a visit, but it is a bit of a trek down the Charoen Krung Road from Saphin Tamsin area.
  • Small cemetery, feels a bit surreal compared to the environment, a mix of christians, jewish, german and chinese graves
  • Pretty cute little spot with a river view. r.i.p.
  • I came from Sukhumvit with taxi. Next time I'm going to take the Sky Train and only take a taxi down Charoen Krung. The cemetary was locked - I didn't even notice it, went straight into the Protestant Cemetary - the Jewish cemetary is the brown gate adjacent to the left of the Protestant one. Searched for a local caretaker and finally a key was produced, The Protestant Cemetary is quite fascinating with lots of history - for travellers, and actually has quite a few Jewish Tombs too. Definitely worth a stroll. Unfortunately, I went to visit my friend who.passed away and was burried there instead of in Cambodia where he lived. It's a quiet place, Lot's of shade. Bring candles and matces with you.
  • The Evangelical Cemetery of Bangkok is one of the most interesting in all of Asia, besides the Foreign General Cemetery in Yokohama, you can also find here, Jewish, Catholic and Protestant graves side by side. Astonishingly, to this day, the graves of Europeans who died more than 100 years ago are still being nurtured. The many sailor graves with tombstones in Dutch, Danish, English and German are particularly interesting. One of my favorite places in Bangkok.
