Lake Chala, Moshi

4.3
#3 of 9 in Nature in Moshi
Fed by the groundwater draining from Mount Kilimanjaro, Lake Chala provides plenty of opportunities to kayak or swim in a pristine natural setting. Surrounded by native trees, grasses, and flowering plants, the lake draws hundreds of species of birds and butterflies, as well as large birds of pray. Look out for African fish eagles and buzzards, frequently seen on the lake's shores. Other animals often spotted here include baboons, kudu, and elephants. • Nothing is all inclusive in Tanzania!! @ That's for sure you have to think about when a distant trip to lake Chala. We paid a decent ' fee ' to the nature park visit, (28,000 shlling p. p + 10,000 for the car) but there was niets'inclusives'aan. Because then had to the owners of the lodge a private-fee of 15,000 shilling pp. be paid to the Lake are allowed to visit. So we had about 100,000 shilling = 37 euro paid before we had seen something. That the visit is not worth it. .... Especially if the Guide has to say hardly anything and ' kolen_engels ' speaks but also begs to tip. The trip there (by classic African landscapes and villages) was the one that made this day trip worth it. Sure when Mount Kibo suddenly appeared behind a mountain. Conclusion: there are better swimming areas near and for only the costs are disproportionate.. ...

  • It is very tiring to climb up and down. But it's worth. The caldera is a unique and exciting place. You can swim down even. Top walk on the edge of the crater to the Kenyan border and enjoys great views. Sometimes you can see elephants.

  • This is an amazing scene to behold from the Tanzanian side. Hiking can be done if you got time.
  • This is a strikingly beautiful crator lake inside a a caldera. The hike to the bottom is a bit steep so you have to be careful with your footing. The lake itself has magnificent shades of blue, green or turquoise depending on the time of the year and how the light hits it. Only downside is that it isnt that swimmer friendly and you are met with warning signs all the way down. There is a broken canoe there but it would have been a perfect place to canoe or kayak. If you have a drone its also a great place for some aerial shots.
  • Very beautiful place. Serene and picturesque although neglected.
  • An undiscovered Gem....such a beauty
  • Nice and affordale lodges.
