Fed by the groundwater draining from Mount Kilimanjaro, Lake Chala provides plenty of opportunities to kayak or swim in a pristine natural setting. Surrounded by native trees, grasses, and flowering plants, the lake draws hundreds of species of birds and butterflies, as well as large birds of pray. Look out for African fish eagles and buzzards, frequently seen on the lake's shores. Other animals often spotted here include baboons, kudu, and elephants. Lake Chala Reviews
Lake Chala is a hidden gem North of Kilimanjaro region. It is a crater lake (90m -200m deep) hidden in a 30 minutes scary downhill hike. However, it well worth the view. Quite beautiful! I recommend c... more »

This was trip a very beautiful, lonely (we've seen only one other person throughout the day). We're Moshi with the Daladala for driven per person 1000Schilling to the main road (duration about 1.5 hour). Then were Pickipickis back and forth - have driven us for 15 000 shillings per person (gravel road, so about 35Min.). directly We had to pay "Entry fees" shortly before the finish. $14 per person and 5000 shillings per pikipiki driver I wonder today what actually? There was no consideration, except an old toilet, which we were allowed to use on the Zahlhaus. Oh and the poor dirt road! When we then arrived at the destination, we were gifted with beautiful views and peace and solitude. Have a vegetarian Curry then eaten in the restaurant. That was moderately good price performance. Then we wanted to wander a bit / a walk. You do this but not one! No, for that you get a Tanzanian guide who speaks not a word of English. You must pay him but with rich 15000 Schilling per person. Madness! Fortunately, the chef of the restaurant was kind enough and has additionally come with. He of totally nice and explained in English and partly German about us. And then it went back 2 hour back to Moshi conclusion: great trip with great panorama, but overall too expensive. Since the Tanzanian tourism authority must actually change something, otherwise to go there soon even not a tourist!

Yes, the way is steep, Rocky and bumpy; But despite an injury to a tendon at the base I could master the way with the help of my friends. Others were wearing only sneakers and have also succeeded. In any case: An excursion which is worth!
This is an amazing scene to behold from the Tanzanian side. Hiking can be done if you got time.
This is a strikingly beautiful crator lake inside a a caldera. The hike to the bottom is a bit steep so you have to be careful with your footing. The lake itself has magnificent shades of blue, green or turquoise depending on the time of the year and how the light hits it. Only downside is that it isnt that swimmer friendly and you are met with warning signs all the way down. There is a broken canoe there but it would have been a perfect place to canoe or kayak. If you have a drone its also a great place for some aerial shots.
Very beautiful place. Serene and picturesque although neglected.
An undiscovered Gem....such a beauty
