An active volcano, Ol Doinyo Lengai sits in a remote area rarely visited by tourists. Mostly appealing to volcanologists and adventurous photographers, the volcano remains one of the world's more unique geologic features known for producing natrocarbonatite lava, which erupts at around 500 C (1,000 F). The ash spread around the surrounding landscape sustains succulent grasses especially appreciated by the migrating wildebeest. You'll need a guide and climbing equipment to scale the peak of the volcano. Put Ol Doinyo Lengai at the forefront of your travel plans using our Arusha online road trip planner .

It is a very liquid lava that flows at a temperature of 500/590 degrees just and night glows red surreal.
Incredible views from the top. But you pay the price! The climb takes 12 hours. You start at midnight , 5 hours later you are at the top. It will test your strength and stamina. The terrain is volcanic ash and magma. Make sure you have proper hiking boots or climbing shoes. The descent is the most challenging. Takes approximately 6 hours. Our legs were shaking for the last 2 hours of the descent. My wife was in tears for the last hours due to pain and tiredness. If you are physically strong and not overweight you will be fine. Final tip, make sure to take lots of water and food. The mountain is pure wilderness and there is nothing up there. Not even a cell reception.
Famously known as the “mountain of God” is an active volcano located south of lake natron within the Arusha region. The mountain summit rises 2962 meters high above sea level, and affords direct views into the caldera of Tanzania’s only officially-certified active volcano, and the world’s only carbonated volcano.
The mountain is spectacular. However it is not cheap to climb. Like everything else in Tanzania that might be of the slightest interest to western tourism, you've got to fork out lots of US dollar s to experience it. The cost for permit and guide to climb Ol Doinyo Lengai is 100$ plus the additional 35$ for comunity established toll gates to enter into this area. Its not within a park but fees supposedly are used for comunity upliftment for the Massai. I am sceptical of this however because a lot of money is being collected by those guys ans the results are nowhere to be seen.
