Mt Meru, Arusha National Park

Must see · Volcano · Nature / Park
Conquer Mt Meru, Africa's fifth-highest mountain. Its crescent shape comes from a volcanic explosion that completely destroyed one of its sides. As you climb towards the summit, you'll pass through different landscapes and vegetation, including rainforest, shrubland, moorland, and a desert. At lower levels, look for elephants, leopards, or buffaloes, and at the highest point follow a trail around the rim of the caldera. Because of possible animal encounters, you must hike accompanied by a park ranger. • Mount Meru provides the best active acclimatization before a climb to Mt Kilimanjaro. It's height is 4562 m, feasible to climb and descend in 3-4 days. The view from the top to Mt Kilimanjaro with...  more »

  • This is a really beautiful trek if you don't dare to do the Kilimanjaro. This mountain had a beautiful view, too.
  • Absolutely loved this place. Hiked it with my dad in 2005. So great. Such good memories.
  • Cool weather... Some times freezing
  • From the heart of Arusha lies a symbolic figure of peace and strength, a strong mountain of pure direction. Mount Meru is a dormant stratovolcano located 70 kilometres west of Mount Kilimanjaro in the country of Tanzania. At a height of 4,562 metres (14,968 ft),it is visible from Mount Kilimanjaro on a clear day, and is the fifth-highest mountain in Africa, dependent on definition. Mount Meru is located just north of the city of Arusha, in the Arusha Region of Tanzania. It is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania, after Mount Kilimanjaro. The Momella route – which starts at Momella gate, on the eastern side of the mountain – is used to climb Mount Meru. Much of its bulk was lost about 8,000 years ago due to an eastward volcanic blast, similar to the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in the U.S. state of Washington. Mount Meru most recently had a minor eruption in 1910.The several small cones and craters seen in the vicinity probably reflect numerous episodes of volcanic activity. Mount Meru's caldera is 2.2 miles (3.5 km) wide. Mount Meru is the topographic centerpiece of Arusha National Park. Its fertile slopes rise above the surrounding savanna and support a forest that hosts diverse wildlife, including nearly 400 species of birds, and also monkeys and leopards.
