Island Landmark
Guishan Island boasts Taiwan's only active volcano. Named for its close resemblance to a floating sea turtle, the 2.85 sq km (1.1 sq mi) island sits atop a stratovolcano rising from the sea floor. It was originally home to fishermen before being used as a military base in 1977; it opened as a tourist attraction in 2000. Access the island by taking a boat, in fact, watch for dolphins in the area as you go. On the island you can soothe your muscles in active hot springs, climb up steep hills and cliffs, and take in sights of the island's rich plant life. Where to stay in Yilan County

The city center next to the main train station has a number of long-established hotels, with some particularly luxurious options including spas naturally heated from local hot springs. Some budget-friendly options, such as guesthouses and hostels, sit in this densely populated and very developed area, usually along side streets. Look to the south across the river for a good mix of different accommodations in the county townships, and to the hot springs park north of the main city center, where hotels--both luxurious and basic--boast onsite spas using the geothermal waters.

  • Check out the beautiful scenery out there. It is on the northeast part of Taiwan and it is less crowded and lay back than the big cities. Hope you like it.  more »
  • Guishan, literally means Turtle Island, is in the most northern water of Taiwan. The highlight is dolphin and whale watching. We cruised around the island on a 80-passenger ferry. The whole tour was a...  more »
