Lungshan Temple, Wanhua

Must see · Religious Site · Tourist Spot
Known by locals as a "meeting place of the gods," Lungshan Temple serves as one of the oldest and most famous temples in Taiwan. Han settlers from Fujian established the temple in 1738, dedicating it to Kuan-in, the Mother of Mercy, which is represented by a statue in the main hall. This statue was left intact after the main hall was destroyed in an air-raid near the end of World War II. Over the years, the temple suffered damage from cyclones, earthquakes, and fires, but has been restored repeatedly. See numerous Taoist deities in the back hall testifying to the tolerant nature of the Chinese religions. The name of the temple translates to "Dragon Mountain," which explains the colorful dragons on the roof and the intricately carved twirling dragons on the bronze pillars at the entrance. A visit to Lungshan Temple represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Taipei journey planning site to plot your vacation.

  • Arguably the most important temple in Taipei. We were fortunate to visit the temple on the Chinese New Year where hundreds of worshippers visited to get a blessing from the gods. Lovely artificial waterfall located to your immediate right prior to entry. Make a point to enter from the right gate ("Dragon Gate") and exit from the left one ("Tiger Gate") for supposed good fortune.
  • Gorgeous place for a stroll. There are plenty of places to sit and beautiful greenery - trees, flowers, hanging lanterns and steps. Finally fresh air and a nice place to relax! There’s a little kids playground right nearby as well as benches and tables hidden around the site.
  • A very beautiful temple that is famous for marriage. There are a lot of locals and tourists visiting this place. There is a shop that sells amulets, charms, jade etc for various purposes. The staff speaks English well and the place is really clean. Highly recommended to come here as it’s one of the iconic spot to visit.
  • A must-go place to pray. Gorgeous, spiritual, and cultural. There are also some vendors outside selling flowers in case you didn't bring and offering and wanted to make one. I hope people will continue respecting this beautiful temple.
  • One of the very few temples I've visited that isn't crowded. The security guard was nice, friendly, and was smiling warmly. I find Taiwanese people to be very nice and friendly. They're excited talk to you and help you. When you're looking for a place they make an effort to point it out on the map or give you a map. It was a very nice experience.
