Hailed as Asia's largest zoo, Taipei Zoo holds the title as the continent's leader in research, education, and conservation of animal and plant life. Opened in 1914, the property was originally owned by a Japanese zoologist. The family-friendly zoo shelters animals from tropical rainforests, deserts, and temperate zones from all over Asia, Africa, and Australia. You can explore various habitat exhibits, such as the reptile house, insectarium, aviary, and a panda shelter. Took MRT to zoo. We stayed close to MRT main station and it was half hour ride, mostly above ground, on older train. Almost ten minute walk to main gate. Inexpensive entry fee. Zoo is well laid out an... read more »

We were lucky enough to go there on a rainy (just a slight drizzle in the morning) day so there was no crowd. We just strolled right into the panda complex and there were maybe 10 other people there. The main panda attraction aside, the zoo also has pretty educational exhibits and signage in both Chinese and some English. Their bird section was particularly good since there were a lot of colorful tropical birds that I don't normally see living in the temperate zone. Even though the zoo was undergoing construction and some sections were closed off, there were enough things to see that it took nearly the whole day for us to go through the zoo. Would definitely want to come back when they finish construction.
Loved the Taipei Zoo! The zoo covers a huge area and it will take the better part of a day to walk the entire zoo. The panda, penguin, bird and butterfly exhibits were really nice. Lots of fun things to do for the little ones as well. Starting from the main gate you will be walking uphill as you move through the zoo, and at the end there will be carts that will take you all the way back down if you are too exhausted to hike back down on foot. I think I heard that you can ride the Gondola to top of the Zoo and make your way down hill towards the gate. I don't know if this is true or not but this would be the best way to go about your outing to the zoo.

You can pay for the entry using the EasyCard. Just tap & go, rather than queueing to buy a ticket. Super cheap entry fee of NT$60! The panda exhibit is spacious and showed both the male and female panda very well. The Formosa animals part of the zoo was a letdown though as the animals were mostly not visible.
This is a really big zoo with lots of animals including panda. You can take the "trains" inside the zoo to designated locations and then drop off to walk around. Good for family with kids and youngster.
Honestly, didn't like it that much. The park is built more around humans rather than the animals, which are often kept separated in rather small compounds. Yes, they have two pandas, but again there's a huge building with a restaurant and everything, but only 10% of the space is used for the animals. Must be depressing to be an animal on this zoo. They seem to be improving for newer compounds, but still far away from being animal friendly IMO. Other zoos are doing better there.
