Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei, Taipei

3.8
#9 of 36 in Museums in Taipei
Attend contemporary art shows and admire the historic architecture of Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei. Built in 1921, the building served as an elementary school, then the local town hall, before becoming a museum in 2001. Although completely different in purpose and construction from the art it displays, the historical architectural style adds to the ambiance surrounding the contemporary exhibits. See various collections of works by internationally and locally recognized artists in the building, which was built in the Taiwanese colonial style during Japanese colonization. It’s a relatively small art museum that can be visited in under an hour. When I visited, there was only one exhibition called Zero-Gravity Paradise, which presents Kawaguchi Yoichiro’s colorful and immersive computer animation work. The museum is housed in a beautiful building and the people working there speak good English. I thought the admission fee of NT$ 50 (roughly US$ 1.75) is pretty reasonable.

Amazing, worth going, all the exhibitions were great. I tell you, this place is probably the best museum in Taipei(maybe!).

Collection is on the small side, but a great place to stop by if you only have about an hour. Nice to feature Taiwanese artists. Admission is only $50 NTD, but if your bag is bigger than an A4 paper, you have to lock it in a locker. Most signage is exclusively in Chinese, but you can use QR codes or get an audio tour in other languages.

Nothing special. If you have been in all main attractions in Taipei, then I'd say give this one a try and see how you experience it. The entrance fee is cheap. No English translation in the description of the works.

Great exhibition space with interesting and thoughtfully designed ambiance for each room. Museum is not very large but perfect in size for showcasing 3 exhibitions concisely yet thoroughly unraveling an artist's narrative in the given context. Audio tour is available for rent (free) or you can download the tours on your phone with qr codes. Admission ticket is 50nt. Museum site is very informative and well updated. They also offer educational programs and lectures you can sign up for. In short, great choice for spending a fun morning or afternoon with much food for thought.
