Beitou Hot Spring Museum, Taipei

3.8
#5 of 45 in Museums in Taipei
The largest bathhouse in this part of the world at the time it was built, Beitou Hot Spring Museum invites you to start exploring the rich history and culture of Beitou’s hot springs. A Japanese magistrate built the Victorian-style building with a Japanese interior in 1913. The red brick first floor houses the original public baths, where a large central pool, elegantly decorated with stained glass windows, was reserved for male customers only. In a niche in front of its entrance, see a giant piece of "hokutolite" or Beitou stone--a precious mineral with healing properties. The wooden second floor features a tatami lobby and several exhibition areas, including a multimedia auditorium where you can watch an educational video about the museum. The view from the balcony explains why in the 1970s, Beitou was known as the Taiwanese Hollywood. • It is a museum located in the hot springs in Taipei. You can learn the history that developed the hot spring culture is rooted in the age of Japan under the rule. This is the place look at bricks that retro and nostalgic feel somewhere. If you have the opportunity to go to the North and take a look at please stop by.

  • I wonder if this real or man made hot spring. It is really too crowded and concern if it is hygienic.  more »

  • I didn't realize Taiwan has an interesting and somewhat intriguing hot spring history until I visited this museum. There's plenty of stories about the Japanese introducing the benefits of hot springs to the locals, and how they built and maintained the needed infrastructure. Most of the museum exhibits have English descriptions. The museum is housed in a beautiful colonial-style building amid gardens and hot spring spas. The open air sections of the museum were uncomfortably warm during my visit one summer afternoon and the electric fans didn't help much. Admission is free.
  • Nice and quite place. If you want to take hot path spring, please remember take your swimsuit.
  • After taking off your shoes, you can enter for free and enjoy the short visit. Relevant information about the japanese influence on the hot spring culture. Worth a look before having a bath!
  • Nice building in a splendid location. Only complaint is the insistence on wearing slippers (that don't fit!)
  • very historical building. good area to walk around, weekend is no good. overly crowded.
