Hayashi Department Store, Tainan

4.1
#1 of 19 in Shopping in Tainan
The oldest in the city of Tainan, Hayashi Department Store features a memorable combination of traditional and modern. Ever since its opening in 1932, this building has been a favorite shopping and gathering place for citizens. It sustained severe damaged in World War II, but its most famous and important feature remained untouched--the first elevator in the country, which still works today. Here you can shop, have a meal, and see exhibits of historical memorabilia. • Take the old lift, buy a souvenir, and check out the view of Tainan from the roof. Highly recommend visiting at night to see the lights on the building, it's a very nice place to visit whilst in Taina...  more »
  • Built long ago, Lin's Japanese department store with a renewal to the Interior of the building, which opened as a department store. Somewhere in both appearance and internal nostalgia, abound in the retro feel. Lined up units South original products, such as what you are selling well. I want stop once you visit Tainan, where.

  • It is the buildings but in its own way. From the maximum five-seater construction was there are rare. I felt like women's hit did not particularly want to buy what I shop there.

  • Step back in time when you visit this historic department store. Take the lift (accommodates 5-6 pax only) to level 5 and take the stairs up to the level 6 rooftop. There’s a Shinto shrine up there and a cute postbox. The ground floor has all the snacks for sale.
  • Beautiful architecture! There's also a myriad of made/designed in Taiwan products here - it's a good place for souvenirs though I believe some products can be found in Taipei as well. The view from the 6th floor rooftop was just alright but it's a nice spot to enjoy the evening breeze.
  • Almost a hundred years old building with modern finish. Be sure to take a careful look at the floor tiles and the stair. It brings you back to last century. Btw, rooftop is a must. Bought a bracelet and I love it! Can spend hours hanging around.
  • Very interesting story of this building and really like the selection of the merchandise here! You can find so many good presents, mainly modern products with traditional elements. The top floor is a must-go.
  • Historical building and location. Very interesting arrangements and unique items. Reminds me of Eslite in the way it is laid out. Worth a visit!

The long established city of Tainan offers plentiful accommodations for the range of visitors it receives each year. Primarily located to the west of the main train station, hotels range from the luxurious to the basic, and everywhere in between. Overlooking green areas or the canals, the most glamorous among the options here come in old and new buildings, while the more budget-friendly--including youth hostels, guesthouses, and simple hotels--occupy side streets close to the main transport hubs and historic buildings.
