Anping Fort (Anping gubao), Tainan

3.9
#4 of 96 in Sightseeing in Tainan
Historic Walking Area Military Facility
Brush up on your local history with an excursion to Anping Fort (Anping gubao), a 17th-century fort constructed by the Dutch East India Company. Developed over a 10-year period between 1624 and 1634, the fort became a central hub for trade in East Asia throughout Dutch and Japanese occupations of Tainan. Follow well-kept paths to some of the few surviving remnants of the original fort, including the red brick city walls and oyster kiln. Much of the site is newly built, housing a collection of museums for you to wander through, learning the fort’s extensive history. Climb the steps of the observation tower for some of the town’s best views, and make the most of the predominantly English displays. • As a Dutchman and geschiedenisfan I had to visit this place though. With the high speed from Taipei and then nearly an hour by taxi. Doing fine, you will see some of the area. The fort is impressive, especially the opgemetselde wall from 1650 consisting of brick shipped from Batavia and specie of shells and rijstenpap (!). It remains as a home. Also funny to see that the Dutch at that time have introduced the haflsteensmetselverband and the wall anchor (and the DNA for red hair with the locals). Nicely set up site with good English-language notes.

  • Good signs and exhibits. Fort has been rebuilt during the Japanese Occupation
  • Great exhibition about the VOC presence in Formosa. Good info panels and maquettes. Visited it with a High Speed train trip from Taipei and taxi.
  • I love the kind of old building and history stuff! There are also lots of snacks around. And a lot of tourists when its holiday as well!
  • Nice place to visit. You will learn a little bit of history of Taiwan. Entrance is ntd50.
  • Interesting fort with a detailed history. The grounds after pretty nice, and the views from the tower are not bad.

Where to stay in Tainan

The long established city of Tainan offers plentiful accommodations for the range of visitors it receives each year. Primarily located to the west of the main train station, hotels range from the luxurious to the basic, and everywhere in between. Overlooking green areas or the canals, the most glamorous among the options here come in old and new buildings, while the more budget-friendly--including youth hostels, guesthouses, and simple hotels--occupy side streets close to the main transport hubs and historic buildings.
