Rainbow Village Taichung, Taichung

3.6
Rainbow Village Taichung bursts with surreal artwork painted onto the sides of its buildings. Once a part of a network of inexpensive homes given to veterans of World War II and the Chinese Civil War, the village now contains rejuvenated structures painted by Huang Yung-fu Huang, a local artist who covered the buildings in colorful depictions of Chinese characters. Though you don't need to pay an entry fee, you can always donate, or alternatively purchase a souvenir from the gift shop, themed after the artwork in the village. • Small place with beautiful painting. Good quick stop for the kids the run around at the playground and toilet break. Good for first timer, but unlikely to come back again.  more »
  • Huang more than 90-year-old grandfather who, became very famous painting paint some buildings, tourist spot and is now, with incessant tour buses visited. I'd visited Taichung, figures, animals and auspicious words, caricature drawings in paint, felt a little wacky, but is not to be missed.

  • We managed to go there after going to sun moon lake. There is a direct bus from HSR. We asked for directions on how to walk there. It is a very colorful house fully painted. Although we there at night...  more »

  • Nice place to take photos and appreciate the painstaking and extensive artwork of Rainbow Grandpa. Kids will definitely love this place. The extremely colorful and vibrant houses give a really cheerful vibe. This place is really like no other. Even the souvenirs are pretty chic and useful, much unlike tacky and generic souvenirs from other attractions.
  • Nice place for photo-taking. Quick visit. Spent about 30min-1hr. Limited roadside parking opposite said location. Many auspicious sayings painted on the walls & floor by rainbow grandpa. Not easily accessible for strollers/ wheelchair as pathway between houses is narrow.
  • Cool little place. It is very much tourist trap but at least it's relatively interesting to see and can deliver in the Instagram picture department. There is an older lady selling home made ice cream on the street nearby and that was basically the best thing about Rainbow Village. Go for the strangely small colorful houses, stay for the ice cream.
  • One of the attractions and a must place to visit in Taichung. A different kind of experience most specially for artists. Rainbow Village is just a small area and can be explored in a few minutes. There is nothing much to do except to take photos and admire the beautiful artworks. Entrance is free.
  • Nicely decorated houses and walls w vivid colours/ paintings but nothing more. It is NOT a village ! Yet Full of tourists and in a middle of nowhere(not convenient to go there on your own). Can skip if you have other options to go. Can try if you have none lol

Where to stay in Taichung

Look at the Central District for the main accommodations in Taichung. This area contains the majority of the city's high-rise chain hotels, both luxurious and standard, along with a few simple guesthouses, family-run boutique establishments, and hostels. Xitun District features a number of eco-friendly hotels, with the emphasis very much of green grounds, spa relaxation, and restaurants with diverse, seasonal menus. Guesthouses and apartment rentals can be found in the more residential districts encircling the city center.
