Kaomei Wetland, Taichung

4.4
#1 of 30 in Wildlife in Taiwan
An elevated boardwalk snaking through a biodiverse landscape, Kaomei Wetland provides a protected sanctuary for wildlife and plant life. Established in 2005, the wetlands span 300 ha (741.3 ac) of land, consisting of a vast plain of marshy terrain scattered with wind turbines. Stroll the seemingly never-ending length of boardwalk, looking out for tiny crabs and birds in the surrounding watery reeds. Try to time your visit to coincide with sunset, which offers particularly spectacular views across the shimmering expanse. • It's very nice to see the sun. With friends over, in the evening when the water will change gold yellow color, really beautiful. Although a lot of people but because the place is not crowded, very romantic.

  • To visit the sunset, but the weather is not good at all. Hope you can see the sunset one to reach the wind to be able to blow up a person is very exaggerated hope that the next time you can successfully see the sunset to see the beautiful scenery this time very disappointed

  • A really beautiful place .. 高美 direct translate to high and beautiful.. The wind there is really strong which both me and my mom couldn't stand still .. Going there is a bit far and quite a long distance from public bus but is all worth it
  • Nice walk in the afternoon, saw many crabs but didn't see any birds. It was windy and crowded. Had some small eats that was really good! Oyster fritter & sausage + rice sausage
  • I can see how this place would make for a nice evening stroll for families, photography enthusiasts, and nature lovers... but that's only if the weather is good. It was really windy and grey when we went, so we only spent less than an hour there. It's really far from the city centre so most people drive there but it's possible to take public transport too - bus 655 offers the most direct route (see pic attached). We boarded from the rainbow village and the journey was almost an hour - gotta look at the bus schedule and time your visit accordingly.
  • It's about an 1 hour away from taichung city. There is a direct bus #655 which stops at rainbow village and xinwuri station that gets to the wetlands directly. However timings are not very frequent so plan your visit according to the bus schedule.
  • Picturest landscape, but crowded. A bit too touristy for me. Worth a first visit if you're new to Taiwan. Guess I'm more use to the pacific northwest scenery and solitude.

Where to stay in Taichung

Look at the Central District for the main accommodations in Taichung. This area contains the majority of the city's high-rise chain hotels, both luxurious and standard, along with a few simple guesthouses, family-run boutique establishments, and hostels. Xitun District features a number of eco-friendly hotels, with the emphasis very much of green grounds, spa relaxation, and restaurants with diverse, seasonal menus. Guesthouses and apartment rentals can be found in the more residential districts encircling the city center.
