Where to stay in Taichung

Look at the Central District for the main accommodations in Taichung. This area contains the majority of the city's high-rise chain hotels, both luxurious and standard, along with a few simple guesthouses, family-run boutique establishments, and hostels. Xitun District features a number of eco-friendly hotels, with the emphasis very much of green grounds, spa relaxation, and restaurants with diverse, seasonal menus. Guesthouses and apartment rentals can be found in the more residential districts encircling the city center.

  • Personally, it has been the best attraction of Taiwan. I love history and what I wanted to see is this kind of old historical place that has survived from the period of the dinasties until today. Unfo...  more »

  • Not worth the effort to go if you're not Taiwanese. You can only see the house via a guided tour, which is only provided in Chinese. My boyfriend didn't understand Chinese, so I tried translating for him. But even I had trouble understanding the guide sometimes, because she often used a local dialect during the tour, and spoke too softly and too fast (I don't know why she didn't bother using the mic/headset that was provided). What's even worse - she actually excluded us. During the free tea session, she was friendly to everyone in the group and asked after them - everyone except us. Nevermind that I could clearly speak and understand Chinese. We didn't feel welcomed at all. This place is geared towards domestic tourists only, and will exclude anyone who does not understand Chinese or the local dialect.
  • Beautifully preserved historic home of the Lin family. It's like being back in time - all you need is to dress in costumes. Definitely worth visiting when you go to Taichung.
  • It's impressive inside, but the ticketing experience was less than great. Make sure you arrive at the right time for the tours or you can't get in.
  • Beautiful place, nicely maintained. A must see if you are in Taizhong.
  • A place where once hit by earthquake and rebuilt by literature. Not easy to park. But worthwhile to visit one of the four big families - the Lin's.
