Shifen Old Street, New Taipei

4.1
Stroll, shop, and take photos of the famous lanterns at Shifen Old Street, one of the most popular stops along the Pingxi railroad line. This picturesque attraction has a number of souvenir shops and eateries to entertain you during your visit. Though it was initially built to transport coal, this train stop and historical site is now known for its sky lanterns. Here you may be inspired to paint a wish and then release your lantern into the air with hopes that the wish will come true. There are also a number of other attractions within walking distance, including a well-known waterfall. Plan my day in New Taipei using traveler tips and tourist information provided by Inspirock.

  • You can write their wishes on the lantern from first line crossing the suspension bridge and fly. Sometimes the train passes is suspicious.

  • Headed on foot to the coal mining museum, and enjoy the Lantern fly them told police unsure whether in a deserted place is like a museum to become nervous and young at the nearby police station to ask for more information and trouble I gave up and went home. Find out at a later date and visitor at least usually Museum prior to telephone contact and, seems to have reservations. Guidebooks, etc. does not write such things as individual travellers to be careful!

  • Very touristic. In fact, a classic tourist trap. Having said that, ignore what I just said and go anyway. Make sure to see both the main Street and the close by water falls. You will not regret going. A special and beautiful place less than an hour outside Taipei city.
  • One of my most favorite places in Taiwan. You can release the sky lanterns on the train tracks. Really interesting and enjoyable experience. Good place for the whole family. I would recommend coming in the evening. The sight of numerous lanterns floating into the sky is really pretty.
  • A once in a lifetime experience where you get the opportunity to make, light and send off a lantern. We did this as part of a day tour with 'My Taiwan Tour', who drove us there and led us to a particular stall to make them. Seeing so many people sending their lanterns off is a sight to behold. The street itself has a train track running through the middle, also creating quite a spectacle when it does come through. There are also a few food stalls too, although we didn't try any of them.
  • Worth a visit! Great cultural experience and lots of exclusive Taiwanese food This place allows you to experience the Japanese colonization back in the days Food sold at the stalls/shops are DEFINITELY worth a try! We found only 1 toilet there so make sure you do your business before visiting!
  • Shifen is an old town. People go there to light up gigantic lanterns. The ride into Shifen by train departs every hr. So you need to monitor time spent. Walking up to the Shifen waterfalls on a quiet road takes half an hr.
