Tuntex 85 Sky Tower, Kaohsiung

3.4
Climb to the top of the lofty Tuntex 85 Sky Tower and enjoy panoramic views across the cityscape, watching the comings and goings of vessels in Kao port. Standing at 347.5 m (1,140 ft) high, and with a form based on the first Chinese "kanji" (character) of the city's name, the tower was the tallest structure in Taiwan until it was superseded by the Taipei 101 in 2009. Occupied by offices, a department store, and a hotel, the 44th floor of the hotel was omitted due to eastern numerical superstition, and from the 45th floor to the 83rd, the structure contains one of the highest continuous atriums in the world. Head to the 75th floor for the viewing platform, and consider a visit later in the day to take in a picturesque sunset. • It took about four attempts to find the enterance to the Observation deck. It was dated and most certainly showed its age. I am not sure I would bother if I were back in Kaohsiung.  more »
  • Came here with my family for a holiday. The hotel staff tries their best but there is an obvious problem with the management of the hotel. The bedsheets were not fresh. I suspect they did not change i...  more »
  • Kaohsiung's tallest building. 85 on the floor is a little low-slung building Taipei 101. Building stand out anywhere, heard about the Hyatt Hotel and Office tenants.

  • Nice hotel to stay in. Breakfast isn't all that great though. Try to get the harbour view. You get front row seats to sunsets!
  • This hotel is very conveniently located. It is about 8 min walk to 捷运 R8 station and 6 min walk to light rail C5 station which can take one directly to Dream Mall, Pier 2 and Sizihwan. There are also plenty of dining options around the hotel, from roadside stalls to cafes to restaurants, one will be spoilt for choices all around the clock. The hotel room is very spacious and comes with many windows to give guests a wide view of the skyline, but unfortunately the city has been shrouded in haze. Service standard is reasonable. All in all, I will recommend this hotel because it is afterall a landmark of Kaohsiung, for the same price the view it can offer is the best and its location is favourable.
  • Went on a cloudy day. The windows are dirty on top of that. Staff are pretty redundant doesn't understand service standard
  • Epic views from Room 6415 as has been noted before. The hotel is a bit dated with no sockets by the bed and rather lame decor but all is forgiven as soon as you look out of the windows. There is a huge amount of building going in this area and it will look very different next time we visit.
  • A great lodging venue, especially price-conscious travellers. It is stone-throw away from zihchiang night market, five-minute walk to san-duo shopping district metro, and buses available to great tourists attractions. Not forgetting the many economic but delicious eateries nearby, and even several grocery-cum-accessories stores within walking distance.

Where to stay in Kaohsiung

Kaohsiung caters to a range of budgets and styles in the accommodations it provides for its guests. To keep things simple and easy, take a look at the options close to Formosa Boulevard, the station where the two metro lines intersect. To the north lies the main train station, and the area has been dotted with high-rise hotels, both standard and luxurious. Backpacker-friendly hostels are never too far away in this district, while a number of traditional guesthouses can be found in the surrounding residential areas. Atmospheric, and usually budget-friendly, they provide a good option to for those wanting a side of the city other than the ultra-modern one of the central area.
