Tuntex 85 Sky Tower, Kaohsiung

3.5
Climb to the top of the lofty Tuntex 85 Sky Tower and enjoy panoramic views across the cityscape, watching the comings and goings of vessels in Kao port. Standing at 347.5 m (1,140 ft) high, and with a form based on the first Chinese "kanji" (character) of the city's name, the tower was the tallest structure in Taiwan until it was superseded by the Taipei 101 in 2009. Occupied by offices, a department store, and a hotel, the 44th floor of the hotel was omitted due to eastern numerical superstition, and from the 45th floor to the 83rd, the structure contains one of the highest continuous atriums in the world. Head to the 75th floor for the viewing platform, and consider a visit later in the day to take in a picturesque sunset. • 10 minutes away from sanduo MRT station. Easy to locate from a distance and easy to ask for directions to. Many entrances, which is confusing. Reception/security counter? At the main entrance is extre...  more »

  • Great views from the balcony. A little pricey and not much else to do other than see the views and have a drink at the coffee shop. Still worth the visit. The facilities were not very clean.
  • I only stayed two nights for business but had a good experience. The room was well sized with a comfortable bed but there was construction going on across the street with noticeable noise throughout the night. The continental breakfast was very nice with lots of choices for everyone. The hotel is broken up requiring 2 elevators to get from your room to the ground floor so don't plan on leaving at the last minute if you are in a hurry.
  • Its pretty nice if you like views. Would have been 4 star had I not step on a floor on the highest floor only to realize the thing was breaking. Not a good thing when your 85 floors above ground to question if the structure is well built. It is a nice view and theirs a cafe shop on the top floor tho.
  • Cool attraction. On a clear day or night, the viewing deck is good value at around nt150 per ticket. The sky lounge also has decent food that is not expensive by Western standards and also has a great view.
  • Great service, although rooms can use an upgrade. Foods were decent.

Where to stay in Kaohsiung

Kaohsiung caters to a range of budgets and styles in the accommodations it provides for its guests. To keep things simple and easy, take a look at the options close to Formosa Boulevard, the station where the two metro lines intersect. To the north lies the main train station, and the area has been dotted with high-rise hotels, both standard and luxurious. Backpacker-friendly hostels are never too far away in this district, while a number of traditional guesthouses can be found in the surrounding residential areas. Atmospheric, and usually budget-friendly, they provide a good option to for those wanting a side of the city other than the ultra-modern one of the central area.
