A complex of old warehouses converted into exhibition halls and artsy boutiques, The Pier-2 Art Centre houses various modern art projects in the middle of a huge abandoned industrial district. Take in the psychedelic-colored sculptures, installations, graffiti, large paintings, and other street art, and browse around the various industrial structures, including an old steam engine on display. You can also stroll along the wharf or take a mini-train tour of this post-industrial area, built in 1973. Cafes, bars, bookstores, and handicraft shops cluster in this private, university-managed center. • Awesome place to visit in Kaohsiung, lots of cool artworks and different sculptures to take pictures of. Definitely a must visit here. There's a huge Bumblebee, if you're a fan of transformers you'll like it here. Good hangout spot on the weekend and they also have different shops around that you can check out. The train ride is cute too.
  • A must visit if you are in the Kaohsiung area. There are many pieces of art on display here and during the afternoon and evenings you can find vendors selling hand crafted stuff from coffee to jewelry! When I went (during a holiday) there was even a live band playing. It was very lively at night. Note that there are 2 pier areas that have art and vendors and they are a few block from each other. Visit both!
  • Amazing! amazing!! We loved exploring this district for the whole day. Awesome innovative art work. Favourite part of Kaohsiung - must visit!
  • Has always been one of my favourite places in Kaohsiung. They've built a light rail through it recently. Can't walk around some of the places I use to.
  • Great space. Cool art pieces. Lots of photo ops. If you're going with young children, there is a mini train tour they offer!

Where to stay in Kaohsiung

Kaohsiung caters to a range of budgets and styles in the accommodations it provides for its guests. To keep things simple and easy, take a look at the options close to Formosa Boulevard, the station where the two metro lines intersect. To the north lies the main train station, and the area has been dotted with high-rise hotels, both standard and luxurious. Backpacker-friendly hostels are never too far away in this district, while a number of traditional guesthouses can be found in the surrounding residential areas. Atmospheric, and usually budget-friendly, they provide a good option to for those wanting a side of the city other than the ultra-modern one of the central area.
