Cihou Lighthouse, Kaohsiung

4.2
#3 of 31 in Historic Sites in Kaohsiung
Lighthouse Tourist Spot
The Baroque-style Cihou Lighthouse affords panoramic views of the Port of Kaohsiung, from high on Chihou Mountain. The original structure was built in 1883 using Chinese-style red brick, but was renovated and rebuilt during the Japanese occupation, creating the structure you see today. The lighthouse was made a Class 3 Building of Historical Interest in 1985, and soon after was opened to the public, with the tower itself being accessible. Climb to the top of the lighthouse, where the new level-four rotary lens light is housed, and take in the wide-ranging views of the city and the ocean. Where to stay in Kaohsiung

Kaohsiung caters to a range of budgets and styles in the accommodations it provides for its guests. To keep things simple and easy, take a look at the options close to Formosa Boulevard, the station where the two metro lines intersect. To the north lies the main train station, and the area has been dotted with high-rise hotels, both standard and luxurious. Backpacker-friendly hostels are never too far away in this district, while a number of traditional guesthouses can be found in the surrounding residential areas. Atmospheric, and usually budget-friendly, they provide a good option to for those wanting a side of the city other than the ultra-modern one of the central area.

  • The white lighthouse built by British in 1883, after that rebuilt by Japan in 1918. Standing here can saw the whole Kaohsiung port, cargo ships often go through the lighthouse and out of the sea.  more »
  • Continued to the lighthouse from the storeland. Was closed when i arrived but it would be a nice place to enter and take photos if its open. I would recommend that you rent a double electrical bicycle...  more »
  • I came here at night and there is nothing to see, which seems a contradiction in terms. The light radiating is very weak and can barely be seen from the harbour. The lighthouse itself is completely ob...  more »

  • It's ok to visit. Nothing so special other than the Lighthouse. The Lighthouse in the island is the best spot to see the whole area along with huge container ships passing through the Kaosiung port. If you want to see the hakka people-on fishing, please wander around the seaside. One con: The sand here is very dirty
  • If you enjoy elevated views, you should not miss this place. Not open at night though, what a pity.
  • It has nothing at all, it is best to rent bicycle from kaohsiung then use Google map, to cycle here then cycle back.
  • A lighthouse that's full of history, but you definitely want to bring a guide with you.
  • Steep slope to the light house and had to climb multiple flights of stairs, probably not suitable for a elderly to tag along. The view is definitely worth the effort to get to the top and on the way you can enjoy the scenic view of the surrounding.
