Government Building Tourist Spot
The Rathaus in Zurich, Switzerland is Zurich's Town Hall. The Rathaus was built from 1694-1698. It served as the seat of government and administration of the Republic of Zurich until 1798. The canton of Zurich owns it since 1803, and it houses both legislative chambers, the cantonal parliament () as well as the City Parliament (). It must be distinguished from the Stadthaus (City Hall), which is the seat of the city's executive government, the City Council () and its administration.HistoryIt is built on a fundament anchored in the river Limmat and faces the Limmatquai at a pedestrian bridge, or the Rathausbrücke. The 17th century building replaces an earlier Rathaus built in 1397, which in turn replaced a 13th-century court house . Rathaus is also the name of a quarter within the Altstadt district. It is an integral part of the medieval town on the right side of the Limmat, separated by the Hirschengraben from the Hochschulen quarter uphill to the east, and delimited by the Bellevue and Central squares to the south and north, respectively.Literature Christian Renfer: Schweizerische Kunstführer GSK, Band 637/638: Das Rathaus in Zürich, Bern 1998, ISBN 3-85782-637-1 Konrad Escher: Die Kunstdenkmäler des Kantons Zürich. • Lovely area with the old world charm, with beautifully maintained buildings. Could not go inside, but seeing it from the outside too is an experience.  more »

  • Great building on the river!
  • Wasn't sure what to expect when I got here, but was presently surprised. I was trying to figure out my favourite part about Switzerland and you know what, I've decided, that their flags a big plus.
  • The Rathaus Zurich is a great starting point for an exploration of Zurich’s Old Town. The Zurich Altstadt is filled with medieval lanes and pathways that offers plenty of hidden gems. Restaurants, cafes, clubs and even boutiques can sometimes jump out at you. Suggest you allocate the entire day just walking around and getting lost.
  • police train station is disgusting
  • A beautiful town hall with lots of history and tradition. Very well preserved and maintained.

Where to stay in Zurich

As the financial hub of the country, it shouldn't come as a surprise that staying in Zurich usually comes at a price. The city puts emphasis on its glamorous four- and five-star hotels and international chains that appeal to traveling professionals. There a handful of hostels and guesthouses for the budget-conscious traveler. When staying in Zurich, you'll find that the majority of the accommodation offerings are in close proximity to the city core, either on the left or right bank. The left bank is the glitzier of the two, with its grand restaurants, shops, and proximity to the banks and train station. The right side, as home to the Old Town, charms with its historical atmosphere. Here you'll find independently owned boutique hotels and some mid-range options. The city also sports several hotels geared toward wellness, with spas and saunas. These tend to be pricey too, but you're guaranteed a truly relaxing retreat.
