#1 of 21 in Zoos & Aquariums in Switzerland
Zoo / Aquarium Nature / Park
An oasis of greenery on a wooded hill east of the city's downtown area, Zoo Zürich shelters over 2,000 animals of about 250 different species. In addition to a large aquarium and open-air aviary, the park features special areas dedicated to African animals, as well as large enclosures for red pandas, snow leopards, tigers, lions, and otters. A replica of a tropical rainforest, the zoo's top attraction, provides visitors with a hands-on learning experience about the natural environments of Madagascar. If you time things right, you may be able to catch the daily penguin parade. Check the website for special events and guided tour options. Where to stay in Zurich

As the financial hub of the country, it shouldn't come as a surprise that staying in Zurich usually comes at a price. The city puts emphasis on its glamorous four- and five-star hotels and international chains that appeal to traveling professionals. There a handful of hostels and guesthouses for the budget-conscious traveler. When staying in Zurich, you'll find that the majority of the accommodation offerings are in close proximity to the city core, either on the left or right bank. The left bank is the glitzier of the two, with its grand restaurants, shops, and proximity to the banks and train station. The right side, as home to the Old Town, charms with its historical atmosphere. Here you'll find independently owned boutique hotels and some mid-range options. The city also sports several hotels geared toward wellness, with spas and saunas. These tend to be pricey too, but you're guaranteed a truly relaxing retreat.

  • The place is mostly under construction and animals were out of site. The only interesting section was related to elephants.  more »
  • The Zoo is very well done and interesting for its visitors - especially the places which are made new in the last few years are amazing...Elefants house, Tigers and many more... Always worth a visit.....  more »
  • Getting to be a long walk these days as they expand the areas of each animal group. A bit hilly, but certainly varied & interesting for families. The Tropical area is nice.  more »

  • Zürich zoo is one of the most humane zoos I know. It's green, it's nice, the animals have proper space to move in and just generally don't look miserable, but rather quite at ease and well cared for. The zoo is constantly expanding and improving, so it's actually worth paying it a repeated visit.
  • Seemed to be a well maintained Zoo however some animals, especially the monkeys, had an empty and sad look which was the reason why we left earlier then planned. Maybe we're just not Zoo people. Animals in Zoo's never have the space they have in their natural habitat. We're however convinced that the animals are kept as good as it is possible in a Zoo.
  • Very nice place to go. When we went it was very quiet and gave us time to view all of the animals. The Madagascar rainforest is a must see!
  • Great zoo. Well thought out enclosures giving as natural a habitat as possible for the animals. Also building new enclosures for the coming years.
  • We visited Zürich zoo a lot over the years. They are always working on extending some part or other. It's a fantastic place to spend the day.
