Museum Rietberg, Zurich

(4.6/5 based on 280+ reviews on the web)
Admire displays of Asian, African, American, and Oceanian art at Museum Rietberg, the only art museum of non-European cultures in the country. Housed in several historical buildings, the museum's core collection comes from a donation from Baron Eduard von der Heydt. Highlights from the Indian collection include the South Indian bronze of Shiva Nataraja, dating back to the Chola dynasty. The site also offers Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain sculpture and bronzes from the 3rd to 16th centuries, as well as paintings on paper, fabric, and palm leaf from the 12th to 19th centuries. The African collection showcases sculptures from the Dogon region in Mali and masks and figures from the Ivory Coast, as well as other areas. The China collection includes Ming dynasty pottery. You can take a public tour upon entry to the museum. Use public transportation to reach the site, as there are no public parking spaces nearby. • Exciting underwater discovery from ancient Egypt, very well staged and taught. Incredible exhibits. A journey worth but also to other exhibitions seen yet always good exhibitions. The Museum staff is very friendly and the previously visited tours conducted by competent intermediaries. The Park is beautiful and especially in winter, you have a unique view.

  • Went to see the stunning exhibition of Frank Goddio's underwater excavations at Heraklion which is on until mid July. Very steep entry fee of Chf 25. That includes an audio guide but it wasn't very go...  more »
  • The special exhibition Osiris is highly recommended, also a small museum guide for schoolchildren (CHF 3.) there for the visit for children to experience. The captions are in English and German. The garden invites you to linger. There is also a cafeteria and a food truck.

  • One of the most beautiful and impressive museums in Zurich (if not in Switzerland), located in the idyllic Rieterpark.
  • Quite and interesting collection, but the front staff can be extremely rude. This is a theme I've noticed in Zurich, especially if you speak Hochdeutsch or English to a person in a service position. Xenophobia in a world art museum... hm....
  • One of the best museums in Zurich. The only one I know of where you can find Asian pieces.
  • Beautiful gardens with a great view. The museum is well renovated with a great collection of non European art.
  • Beautiful museum situated on a gorgeous hillside. Decent exhibits, but really enjoy the landscape and the architecture.
