Museum Rietberg, Zurich

#3 of 29 in Museums in Zurich
Admire displays of Asian, African, American, and Oceanian art at Museum Rietberg, the only art museum of non-European cultures in the country. Housed in several historical buildings, the museum's core collection comes from a donation from Baron Eduard von der Heydt. Highlights from the Indian collection include the South Indian bronze of Shiva Nataraja, dating back to the Chola dynasty. The site also offers Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain sculpture and bronzes from the 3rd to 16th centuries, as well as paintings on paper, fabric, and palm leaf from the 12th to 19th centuries. The African collection showcases sculptures from the Dogon region in Mali and masks and figures from the Ivory Coast, as well as other areas. The China collection includes Ming dynasty pottery. You can take a public tour upon entry to the museum. Use public transportation to reach the site, as there are no public parking spaces nearby. • An awesome Museum and very interesting, original exhibits. I find though that the ticket is expensive.

  • We were at the Rietberg mountains Museum today with our three children (1.5 / 8 / 10 years) and looked at the great exhibition of Osiris. The Museum architecture as well as the content of the collections - is but also very fantastic, highly recommended. Visiting with small children or even babies is not recommended, as we have painfully discovered - during our visit, we were friendly definitely asked to leave the exhibition until he is quiet, because there had been "Problems" with the smallest. He has not cried before, but of course sounds and forward slightly on the beautiful echo. He has to us of course, what he sees. Children are hard to make :-(quietly. To be thrown out, from an exhibition is not yet happened us in the various museums in Europe! Usually, the visitors found it great that we children museums besuchen...in Zurich probably rather not...

  • Staff was very friendly and helpful and the audio tour was definitely interesting. Check out the visible storage off in the corner; incredible amount of smaller pieces of art that were fascinating to see.
  • They nailed it again with the special exhibition Osiris. The museum is worth a visit anyway, I'd say it's a must-see in Zurich. But the Egyptian statues are simply amazing and a rare view in Switzerland. It took exactly three hours to visit it. Restaurant is ok for a drink, food solala.
  • One of the best places in the city. Very interesting museum, beautiful park, interesting facilities and a nice bar/restaurant.
  • A hidden gem among Zürich's museums, the Rietberg houses an enormous Asian collection. Also nice for a stroll or picnic in the park.
  • One of the best museums in Zurich. The only one I know of where you can find Asian pieces.

Where to stay in Zurich

As the financial hub of the country, it shouldn't come as a surprise that staying in Zurich usually comes at a price. The city puts emphasis on its glamorous four- and five-star hotels and international chains that appeal to traveling professionals. There a handful of hostels and guesthouses for the budget-conscious traveler. When staying in Zurich, you'll find that the majority of the accommodation offerings are in close proximity to the city core, either on the left or right bank. The left bank is the glitzier of the two, with its grand restaurants, shops, and proximity to the banks and train station. The right side, as home to the Old Town, charms with its historical atmosphere. Here you'll find independently owned boutique hotels and some mid-range options. The city also sports several hotels geared toward wellness, with spas and saunas. These tend to be pricey too, but you're guaranteed a truly relaxing retreat.
