An art lover's dream come true, Kunsthaus houses one of the most significant art collections in Switzerland. Designed by architects Karl Moser and Robert Curjel, the museum opened in 1910. Today, the permanent collection boasts major works by Gauguin, van Gogh, Cezanne, and Monet. The museum also houses a comprehensive collection of works by Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti, including the trademark stick figures that catapulted this artist to world fame. Be sure to leave plenty of time for the galleries displaying classic photographs by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, and Andre Kertesz. • I loved all the impressionist & expressionist paintings by the "big" names! A bit hard to navigate the museum. Nice with no admission on Wednesdays. Highly recommended!  more »
  • Go often to the Kunsthaus - there are always new exhibitions. Forward already to the extension of the building.

  • Amazing wealth of art here. You will need a whole day for this museum. There is a room of Marc Chagall's works! The impressionism floor is priceless! I'm speechless! Maybe my pictures will speak for themselves.
  • Ok! It's a great museum. Many masters and periods represented. Best part of our trip to Zurich so far. And it was free today! So expensive was not an issue. Maybe it's a Wednesday thing. Check online before you go. Many museums have a free day.
  • It's free on Wednesdays and generally worth checking out if you have the time. There are some nice Van Gogh pieces and a lot of nice contemporary art.

Where to stay in Zurich

As the financial hub of the country, it shouldn't come as a surprise that staying in Zurich usually comes at a price. The city puts emphasis on its glamorous four- and five-star hotels and international chains that appeal to traveling professionals. There a handful of hostels and guesthouses for the budget-conscious traveler. When staying in Zurich, you'll find that the majority of the accommodation offerings are in close proximity to the city core, either on the left or right bank. The left bank is the glitzier of the two, with its grand restaurants, shops, and proximity to the banks and train station. The right side, as home to the Old Town, charms with its historical atmosphere. Here you'll find independently owned boutique hotels and some mid-range options. The city also sports several hotels geared toward wellness, with spas and saunas. These tend to be pricey too, but you're guaranteed a truly relaxing retreat.
