Fraumünster Church, Zurich

(4.1/5 based on 1,000+ reviews on the web)
Admire the distinctive stained-glass windows designed by artist Marc Chagall at Fraumünster Church, a major landmark in the city's Old Town. Erected on the remains of a former Benedictine abbey for aristocratic city women, this 13th-century Gothic church features an eye-catching blue spire rising proudly over the city's skyline. In addition to Chagall's windows in the choir stalls and the southern transept, which depict various biblical stories, the church also boasts a 9 m (30 ft) tall stained glass by Swiss painter Augusto Giacometti. • Fraumunster has a great history, a cripta with fantastic historic documents and ruins and some remains from the catholic era. But... I don't see the point in charging people to visit it, as there's no...  more »
  • Nice place to visit. Quite quiet, so a nice good place to sit down and reflect. And think about the worldly things you want to explore at night.
  • Visiting many cathedrals in Europe, we first had to pay an entrance fee. 5 francs-compulsory donation. It was a Sunday. Open the door to the Church in 12 days. The Church is very small and the inside looks absolutely puritanski. Except for three painted Windows by Chagall and glance throw.

  • Such a shame for Fraumünster to start to ask people to pay a donation! A donation cannot be obligatory. If it is a fee, then please call it a fee! I would have made a much bigger donation than chf2 they ask for, if it would not be done in such an unfriendly manner. I used to come to Fraumünster from time to time, now because of this attitude & chaos at the entrance - not any more. The staff on the entrance does not speak any german...
  • Interesting, a bit poor in decoration, apart from the glass work by Chagall. It's a shame asking 5 chf per person and finding a gift shop with high prices INSIDE the Church. Everything has a high price here!
  • Impressive stained glass windows of Marc Chagall (and more to see). "Must See" location! Fraumunster is a nice church to visit. It is open to the public and entrance is free-of-charge. The stained glass windows of Marc Chagall is one of best known sights in this church. Each window has its own color theme. The three windows in the east side depict Jacob, Christ and Zion. There is more to see here, and explanation can be found on signs / cards throughout the church.
  • Nice Church, but very unfriendly and rude staff. Better only have a look from the outside.
  • Worth visiting for beautiful stained-glass windows. Other than that - just an average church.
