The Matterhorn, Zermatt

#1 of 221 in Parks in Swiss Alps
King of the Swiss Alps, the colossal The Matterhorn rises above the picturesque resort town of Zermatt, on the border between Switzerland and Italy. The mountain's summit is 4,478 m (14,692 ft) high, its four steep faces soaring above the surrounding glaciers and facing the four points of the compass. First ascended in 1865 by a team of alpinists led by English mountaineer Edward Whymper, the pyramid-shaped mountain continues to draw ambitious climbers from around the globe. Less audacious visitors can still access sweeping views of the scenery by taking an aerial cable car departing from Zermatt up to a dizzying height of about 3,800 m (12,500 ft). With our international travel planner, Zermatt attractions like The Matterhorn can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • A few days ago I was lucky to be able to visit Zermatt in full Swiss Alps. As I say in the title, I think that it is a place to visit at least once in life. Represents all the stereotypes of Switzerland: scenic beauty, snow, sky, luxury... and all in a wonderful setting with the Matterhorn peak in the background. What most impressed me is that he is not accessible by car, only by train from other nearby towns. We chose to leave your car in Täsch, which was closest, and take a train from back and forth by 16chf. A luxury place, in all aspects.

  • Amazing mountain, we will never forget. View from gornergrat is amazing. We love to come in summer again  more »
  • Instead of spring skiing, we had this time of winter in Zermatt. For this but also the TOBLERONE mountain was completely shrouded in white. Rare and rarely beautiful.

  • Well what can I say about the Matterhorn. Over 5000 metres above sea level. The views are stunning up there if your lucky enough to take a helicopter ride. The crevases and terrain are awesome. We landed on the edge of the mountain parking our helicopter I kid you not. I was walking about in -10 degrees the air gets very thin the higher you go. Inspirational!!!
  • Amazing experience. No words to describe. Peaceful and a bliss to eyes and heart. Paradise on earth.
  • Matterhorn is beyond human words. If i can make an atempt to describe it from my humble human condition when i was looking at its grandeur, i would say It is a throne of ages, of stone and frost. Still and silent over the world, distant, imposing. Majestic and beautiful like so many mountains across the Earth, yet so unique. True contemplation.
  • Beautiful mountain. It is breathtaking when it’s sunny and there are no clouds. Snowboarding while seeing the mountain right in front of me was once in a lifetime kinda experience. I can’t wait to go back there for hiking in the summer!
  • Saw the Matterhorn from the Italian side . Beautiful of course. Liked to have seen from more angles.
