Gornergrat, Zermatt

Must see · Lookout · Tourist Spot
For a classic train experience in the Alps, hop on Gornergrat, one of the highest railway lines in Europe. Opened in 1898, the railway takes sightseers and hikers from the resort village of Zermatt to the very top of a rocky ridge in the western part of the Alps. The first electric rack railway built in Switzerland, the line passes through a popular skiing area, noted for its 29 peaks reaching above 4,000 m (13,000 ft) in elevation. On clear days the line's terminus at the top of the ridge offers unbeatable views of the surrounding mountaintops, as well as the second largest glacier in the Alps. Our Zermatt trip builder app makes visiting Gornergrat and other Zermatt attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • Really cool little train trip up to the top in order to see the Matterhorn! We were blessed with perfect weather to see the mountain clearly and enjoy some end of summer warmth.
  • It's expensive to get up here, but it is worth every cent. I have never in my life seen such incredible views. The train ride up provided beautiful views of both the Matterhorn and the valley below. Once at the Gornergrat, there are stunning views of a glacier, the Matterhorn and the planetarium itself. My wife and I rented snowshoes before going up so we could snowshoe between trainstops and it was magical. I would highly recommend this.
  • I love this place
  • The breathtaking view that you will never forget! The cost is steep $200 Swiss Franc, yet totally worth it! Bring the good photography gear! Also, leave on the very first train you can get up so you can enjoy and hang out enjoying the absolutely astonishing views all day! The total time to get up is about 2 hours. You will change trains about 3-4 times on the way up and down. If you feel dizzy as you get there, take it easy, drink some coffee and some chips and wait until you feel situated before continuing to explore. Take your time going through all the steps on the little booklet they give you, and keep going to the next step! Majestic feeling being out there!
  • We love this experience, if you go to Zermatt, pay the train and enjoy the amazing adventure to the Matherhorn, feel the peace and take great pictures.
