Breithorn, Zermatt

4.7
#2 of 6 in Nature in Zermatt
The Breithorn is a mountain range of the Pennine Alps with its highest peak of the same name, located on the border between Switzerland and Italy. It lies on the main chain of the Alps, approximately halfway between the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa and east of the Theodul Pass. Most of the massif is glaciated and includes several subsidiary peaks, all located east of the main summit: the Central Breithorn, the western Breithorn Twin , the Gendarm and the Roccia Nera. The main summit is sometimes distinguished by the name Western Breithorn . The nearest settlements are Zermatt and St-Jacques .The Breithorn is considered the most easily climbed 4,000 m Alpine peak. This is due to the Klein Matterhorn cable car which takes climbers to over 3,820 m from Zermatt for a starting point. The standard route is from the Italian side of the mountain and continues over a glacial plateau before climbing to the summit on a 35 degree snow slope. However, inexperienced mountaineers may run into severe difficulty if caution is not taken near cornices or in bad weather. For experienced climbers wanting more of a challenge, the half traverse of the Breithorn crest is another option.

Climb, not only see the Matterhorn paradise views in front of the eyes. Matterhorn Paradise offers a bright horns and glaciers close. High altitude Observatory visits even so do not act slowly and makes me sick.

Climbed/Walked up to summit from Klein Matterhorn. Top section is pretty steep but non technical. You do need to be properly roped up and wear crampons. Pretty crazy but saw one guy walking on his own...  more »

This big massif that dominates Zermatt turns out be a walk on glacier accessible to everyone (who has a minimum of training), to do as in ski touring. Only danger, downhill, do not walk on the strings lying around groups that go up, it's the busy morning! It is better to do after lunch, as the climb takes only 2 hours...

Where to stay in Zermatt

When staying in car-free Zermatt, proximity to amenities is key, as you'll be mostly restricted to traveling by foot. Populated by charming Swiss chalet-style hotels and inns, Zermatt may be humble in character, but not in price. Most of the hotels are fairly expensive, though there is the odd hostel and pension that might offer a slight discount. To save yourself a bit of money, look into renting an apartment in lieu of a hotel. If you're really strapped for cash, consider camping instead--this area offers a year-round mild climate.
