Looking just like an illustration from a book of fairy tales, Chillon Castle sits on the eastern end of Switzerland's largest lake. Made famous by the poet Lord Byron, who used it as a setting in one of his well-known works, the 13th-century castle ranks among the country's most visited historic monuments. For a sense of the its medieval past, take a guided tour through the courtyards, towers, dungeons, and grand halls, packed with period furniture and artwork. Although many visitors choose to take the bus or even walk here from the nearby town of Monteux, you can also reach the castle by hopping on one of the lake's many guided boat excursions. Excellent audio guide in Italian to move through the many rooms, where there are also audiovisual insights about the history of the Castle and its vicissitudes, about life and customs in the middle ages, with a focus on personalities who lived there. For a thorough examination, it takes at least 2 hours. Beautiful views of the Lake you can admire the Castle. Tip: arrive early in the morning to find easy parking and avoid the rush that inevitably crowd the site.

There are 42 points of interest on the Castle. The visit has a good picture of the life of the 16th century. Also, if you arrive early in the morning, you have right to 3 hours of free parking. Or you buy your ticket, ask for a parking pass. It is the castle to visit in Switzerland!

Beautiful setting and a wonderful tour. We chose the headset tour and it was well worth it. We got a discount on entry with our tourist card from the campsite and spent a good few hours looking round the castle. The few from the top of the keep is well worth it if you can get up there (not for those with mobility issues).

One of the best castle experiences we have ever had! NOTE: DO THE AUDIOGUIDED TOUR. Its not that much more and will greatly enhance your experience as you walk through the castle. It wouldn't have been the same without it.

Really interesting building, in the most attractive setting. One of Switzerland's most popular attractions for good reason. Lots of infomation in each space (over 40 of them) - text in detail in French, German & English. A good amount of detail to keep you engaged but not museum-level. You can learn about the uses of the castle over 3 time periods, the earliest being medieval. Savoy family history included. Lots of photo opportunities of course, including view points of the lake (look for small fish in the crystal clear water). You can have a small picnic in one of the 4 courtyards inside. Practical point: if arriving by car, look for car parking at a pay & display place, it's cheaper than the blue timed badges and allows you to park for longer (@ .80CHF/hr).

Great place to enjoy time in Montreux area. Also when the Weather is not great. Fair prices, interesting stuff - if history is a passion for you. Go and see 😉

Stunning, was actually surprised how beautiful it was inside, and how much info and stuff to see inside there is. It is like stepping back to the 1300s. Of course the outside is just as beautiful as it is in the pictures, you absolutely have to approach by boat for amazing views, probably getting it from either Vevey or Montreux. It gives beautiful all round views of the castle from the Lake so you can get the famous photo angles!
