Niesen, Swiss Alps

(4.3/5 based on 80+ reviews on the web)
The Niesen is a mountain of the Bernese Alps in Switzerland. It overlooks Lake Thun, in the Bernese Oberland region, and forms the northern end of a ridge that stretches north from the Albristhorn and Mannliflue, separating the Simmental and Kandertal valleys.Administratively, the summit is shared between the municipalities of Reichenbach im Kandertal, to the south-east, and Wimmis, to the west and north. Both municipalities are in the canton of Bern. The summit of the mountain (2362 metres) can be reached easily by using the Niesenbahn funicular from Mülenen (near Reichenbach). The construction of the funicular was completed in 1910. Alongside the path of the Niesenbahn is the longest stairway in the world with 11,674 steps. It is open only once a year to the public for a stair run.The literal translation of the German word Niesen is sneeze. Because of its shape, the Niesen is often called the Swiss Pyramid. The Niesen was the subject of a number of paintings by Paul Klee, in which it was represented as a quasi-pyramid.

  • Around Lake Thun in the Bernese Oberland, this is one of the most beautiful view points, the pyramid-shaped mountain Niesen. The general public can take up to 2360 m high on the top via a cable car, one that can be counted on to the steilsten. However, if the small 2000 m difference in altitude on foot facing can enjoy a beautiful walk, certainly the last 500 m because then the vast panorama ever your companion. The mountain path is well maintained and runs with many steep zig-zags up top. Just walking pace 4 to 4.5 you; trained mountain goats to 1:40 until 2 am. There may also be walked in half, or from there: between Schwandegg station 1660 m. The full trip return trip by cable car is pretty pricey (approx. 50 euros) so can save a lot on foot. Best to take only in stable weather, otherwise it's likely to come in above the clouds.

  • Alone due to the ride with the nostalgic funicular a visit to the sneezing would be worth already. But you get much more. A cosy restaurant with all kinds of offers and unforgettable views.

  • We have not stayed here, but enjoyed a beautiful day. The cable car rides are a great experience. All helpful, friendly staff. The restaurant so something of a wonderful place to stay. Only super employees made. Food and beverages are likely to meet all needs. For poor stair-climbing two lifts available are from interchange platform, to get to the restaurant and first observation deck. Well maintained paths and stairs, even if sometimes slightly steep, lead all the way to the topmost viewing platform. From up there you have a panoramic view, which makes the heart beat faster. You can see for example by Thun on Lake Thun, Interlaken and Lake up to Brienz, which means that you can see both lakes in their entirety. All in all a top successful day, we are very happy to again repeat.
