Niesen, Swiss Alps

4.5
#27 of 102 in Nature in Swiss Alps
The Niesen is a mountain peak of the Bernese Alps in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland. The summit of the mountain is 2362m in elevation. It overlooks Lake Thun, in the Bernese Oberland region, and forms the northern end of a ridge that stretches north from the Albristhorn and Mannliflue, separating the Simmental and Kandertal valleys.GeographyAdministratively, the summit is shared between the municipalities of Reichenbach im Kandertal to the southeast, and Wimmis to the west and north. Both municipalities are in the canton of Bern. The summit can be reached easily by using the Niesenbahn funicular from Mülenen (near Reichenbach). The construction of the funicular was completed in 1910.Alongside the funicular is the longest stairway in the world, with 11,674 steps. It is only open to the public once a year for a stair run event. The literal translation of the German word Niesen is sneeze. Because of its shape, the Niesen is often called the Swiss Pyramid. The Niesen may have influenced some modernist paintings by Paul Klee, in which an abstracted pyramidal form is seen.

  • It takes quite a while to get up there with the funicular train but it's really worth it, stunning views from up there all around.  more »
  • Nice route with 360-degree views atop two funiculars, on Lake Thun. The weather is absolutely not to be missed!

  • The panorama of the Bernese Oberland is plain and simply overwhelming. You can combine the visit to the sneezing with breakfast or lunch or to book just one night takes to the dinner and breakfast. A visit to the sneezing is worth the money in any case. In addition, you can climb the Summit on various hiking trails.

  • During my second visit to Switzerland during an early winter we visited Niesen. The experience of Climbing up in Cable car is a remarkable experience. You will enjoy the nice view of green valley, Forest and river. And at the top of the mountain it is a different feel and different world. Especially for someone like me from a costal country. Tips : Check online for seasonal offers for ticket. Be prepared with winter clothing. Food cost is bit high at top, you can bring your own food and have it there.
  • Great adventure. Hiked twice here now. Hiked all around the trails heading up (rather lost) so it extended things 2 hours. Got back on track and (finally!) made it to “half way station” after 5 hours of hiking and jogging. From there, rode up and back down in tram. 75 degrees and all sun. Gorgeous. Not easy hiking at all.
  • Great hike and fantastic views from top! Attached photograph was taken from the Seestrasse near Gunten.
  • Lovely mountain to climb and great technical run back down
  • Amazing view and breakfast buffet.
