Chateau de Tourbillon, Sion

(4.5/5 based on 130+ reviews on the web)
Tourbillon Castle is a castle in Sion in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. It is situated on a hill and faces the Basilique de Valère, located on the opposite hill. The castle was ruined in a fire in 1788. It is a Swiss heritage site of national significance.HistoryThe Diocese of Sion was originally founded in Octodurum, now called Martigny in the early 4th century. In 589 the bishop, St. Heliodorus, transferred the see to Sion, as Octodurum was frequently endangered by the inundations of the Rhone and the Drance. Very little is known about the early Bishops and the early churches in Sion. However, in the late 10th century the last King of Upper Burgundy Rudolph III, granted the County of Valais to Bishop Hugo (998- 1017). The combination of spiritual and secular power made the Prince-Bishops the most powerful nobles in the Upper Rhone valley. Sion became the political and religious center of the region. By the 12th century they began building impressive churches and castles in Sion to represent their power and administer their estates. Valère, as the residence of the cathedral chapter in Sion, was one-third of the administrative center of the powerful Diocese of Sion. In the 12th century the Cathedral Notre Dame de Sion (du Glarier) was built in the town below Valère hill. Glarier Cathedral became the seat of the Diocese of Sion, while the Prince-Bishop of Sion lived in the castle.

  • Every time you find yourself in the mountains while skiing with friends we hold one day of travel that would get acquainted with the place where us. Learn local customs, way of life and traditions. This time, the closest to our ski resort was the city of Sion. Driving around the city in the afternoon, everything seems grey dull and monotonous. The beauty of the city we appreciated seeing it tonight from the mountain and fell in love with this place. On two hilltops nashodjatsja ancient building. Very nicely. It is worth to spend a day exploring each of the locks. Will be spruced up very steep, but worth it!

  • I really like the town of Sion, Switzerland's oldest. and, like all things that I love, I want to make them known to your family and friends. We are close to it, we spent a day in this city of memory, his histories of 7000 years history. Even the ruins of Château de Tourbillon, earn clambering on a climb not quite short, with a keen air and lashing on his face, was a happy choice, when you open the view you can enjoy from up there, Beyond the gaze that sweeps over the vineyards, in favour of sunshine throughout the day, you can imagine the fights, battles , achievements that have occurred in those territories. History, nature, culture, art follow one another and intersect, creating magical moments.

  • Castle itself is quite a ruin, but you can enjoy beautiful views from the top of the castle. They are closing it quite early so it can happen that you walk all the way up to the castle gate and then you find out that it is closed. All in all, it is place which can show you how beautiful this region is.
  • A beautiful castle with a riche history! The view is breathtaking! Be prepared for a long walk to the castle 😉
  • Windy and not busy. The view over the city is stunning and the ruins themselves are neat enough. Paired with the basilica below, this is definitely a place worth visiting.
  • A good place to stop by if you are interested in local history and old castles
  • Amazing view. Definitely worth going.
