Categories: Outdoor Activities
Lake Sils is a lake in the Upper Engadine valley, Grisons, Switzerland. It takes its name from the village of Sils im Engadin. The lake lies at an altitude of 1,797 metres above sea level, between Maloja Pass and Lake Silvaplana. Several mountains over 3,000 metres overlook the lake, notably Piz Corvatsch, Piz Grevasalvas and Piz da la Margna. The lake's drainage basin culminates at Piz Fora and comprises the Vadrec da Fedoz glacier. With a surface area of 4.1 km², Lake Sils is the largest lake of the Engadine. It is also the largest natural lake in the Alps lying above 1,000 metres. The lake was formed by a prehistoric landslide dam, similarly to Lake Silvaplana. The wooded Chastè peninsula extends into the lake at its north-eastern end. At the end of the peninsula there is a plaque to Friedrich Nietzsche with a passage from Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Near the peninsula is located the wooded island of Chaviolas, the largest in Lake Sils. Annually, in winter, the cross-country Engadin Skimarathon crosses the lake, starting at its edge in the Maloja Palace. With our online itinerary creator, Sils im Engadin attractions like Lake Sils can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

Also worth visiting the village of Sils Maria. One tip ... go in the fall, with the warm colors of the larch ... Will amaze you. The only drawback is the cost of the hotels pretty high. Better a day trip!show original
And that because of melted glacier water, or the color of the surface of the Lake is very deep blue-green color. Have seen other Switzerland Lake far deeper Lake did not. But the people who are doing such a beautiful place, wind surfing and gliding just envious.show original

Difficult to access by public transport, because 1 bus every hour about and from St. Moritz. Plan a good 3-4 h for the visits of the edge of the two lakes and the small village. After there are also hiking trails, but on the side of the road a little path would have been appreciated for doing more easily around the Lake. The village looks like not completely occupied holiday villas and it seems that there are not many shops to buy commodities, must therefore move far enough or have a car.show original
