Creux du Van, Neuchatel

4.9
At Creux du Van, hike around an amphitheatre-shaped natural rock formation situated within a large nature reserve. Created by natural water erosion from a glacier millions of years ago, the semi-circular formation is 1,400 m (4,593 ft) wide and 150 m (492 ft) deep. Keep your eyes open for wildlife, such as lynx and ibex. The formation offers views from above and can be accessed by car or foot. Stop by one of the farms with animals or one of the small restaurants on your way up. Be careful, as the area is not fenced, and the drop is steep. • Nice walk to this site accessible from the train station (free for hotel residents or closed train Hostel in Neuchâtel!). If possible make sense of the clockwise; cold fountain downstairs in the middle of the crater then Access from the left to reach the Summit and... eat! Return by the ledge then take 14 turns down and return to the station is 14 km and 700 m of altitude. Nice view on the mountains and on this site. Well and good. To do.

  • Not the Grand Canyon, but definitely worth a visit. Hike from Noiraigue - Ferme Robert-Fontaine Froide - Le Soliat - Noiraigue with fondue at Le Soliat is highly recommended. The Creux you van opens a route step by step. New vistas open up. Very entertaining and even on hot days over long distances in the shade of trees.

  • We are highly walked from the parking lot to the Creux "chez les Favre" you van (about 30 minutes). Is for persons who are not good at the restaurant "Ferme you Soliat" parking available, approx. 5 minutes below the Creux you van. The Creux du Van is a real Swiss tourist attraction and the views just fantastic and stunning! Our little hike from the parking lot chez les Favre up to Ferme you Soliat, along the Creux you van and back to the parking lot took 2 hours approximately and was easy to deal with. Highly recommended for people, the 'great' circular hike from Noiraigue too long where or is exhausting, which however would ride up practically before the rock circus.

  • I've been here a few times and Creux du Van has been spectacular in every season. It's a beautiful & natural rock formation in the Juea mountains in Western Switzerland, quite close to the French border. A little planning is required if you are using public transport. Plan to travel to Noiraigue by train. The trek to the top and around the edge is nice. Not very stressful. You can pause half way to the top in the small farm with the goats and chickens. At the top there are several locations for some really spectacular photos and if you are lucky you can even seen some wild deer here at the top of the cliffs. There is a path to walk back through the centre of the trees within the trees below an you'll pass close to the foot of the cliff. Beware of the occasional falling rock. Best during summer. There a place to stay down below with a path describing how it was formed
  • The easiest way to see it is to drive up to the parking of the restaurant Le Soliat. The cliff is then at a 3 min walk though a field. I do recommended that you combine this sightseeing with a walk, as the cliff as sole attraction (depending on how long you had to drive to get there) is not THAT spectacular. For this, stop at a parking about 2 km before you arrive at the site and walk the rest of the way. You are in a relatively remote area so take a few provisions with you :) Good thing to know: everything is free of charge (parking & sightseeing)!
  • Spectacular view, well worth to walk up on foot (mostly in forest, so well shaded). Alternatively, you can drive up to Le Soliat, then it's just 10 to walk.
  • A must see in th Jura
  • A special place for hiking. Pure nature. Fantastic!

Where to stay in Neuchatel

A visit to the city of Neuchâtel is well-spent lakefront to take full advantage of the panoramic views. Here you'll find a handful of comfortable, moderately priced hotels. The majority of the accommodations are either downtown or close to the train station. In the downtown area visitors can appreciate the broad streets lined with neo-Romanesque sandstone buildings, while still within walking distance to the city's famed absinthe distilleries. Offerings for budget hostels and guesthouses can be slim. High-end five-star hotels and international chains can be found along the water's edge.
