Castle
Looking just like an illustration from a book of fairy tales, Chateau de Chillon sits on the eastern end of Switzerland's largest lake. Made famous by the poet Lord Byron, who used it as a setting in one of his well-known works, the 13th-century castle ranks among the country's most visited historic monuments. For a sense of the its medieval past, take a guided tour through the courtyards, towers, dungeons, and grand halls, packed with period furniture and artwork. Although many visitors choose to take the bus or even walk here from the nearby town of Monteux, you can also reach the castle by hopping on one of the lake's many guided boat excursions. • The Swiss are not known for their health and safety and it can be clearly seen here. Open shafts, open staircases, easy places to fall over. But, it's an old chateau and that's what you should expect ...  more »

  • A very cool castle. Very well preserved and with a lot of stuff to see. The tour is around 10 CHF and it will take you 3-4 hours to visit everything. A little note, be aware that you have to go back through the same small rooms when you get to the top. I expected a magic teleport, or at least an elevator after so much walking :D
  • Lots to do and see at this scenic Swiss castle. One of my favourite parts was exploring the paths and alleyways throughout the buildings, many of which provided sneaking views of the landscape. Make sure you give yourself sometime to see everything.
  • This is s must visit destination if you find yourself anywhere near Lake Geneva. A photographers paradise, amazing views of the alps and the lake. The castle has been wonderfully preserved and is a real step back in time. About a half hour walk from Montreux (recommend it) it's a delight for all ages, and a great family day out.
  • A very nice castle, beautiful sitting on the edge of the lake. We walked ourselves through with the pamphlet to explain the different areas we were in rather than getting the audio guide. A little sparse inside as far as castles go - especially when they charge 10.50 s.francs for students! A bit expensive compared to other tourist attractions in the region.
  • Very nice castle to visit. You get a flyer once you get inside with the explanations in your own language, and there is also many information in every room. It's a place to stay for at least 2 hours since there is much to see. It's easy to go by car since there are parking spots available right in front of the castle.
