Chateau de Chillon, Montreux

4.6
#1 of 164 in Historic Sites in Switzerland
Castle Tourist Spot
Looking just like an illustration from a book of fairy tales, Chateau de Chillon sits on the eastern end of Switzerland's largest lake. Made famous by the poet Lord Byron, who used it as a setting in one of his well-known works, the 13th-century castle ranks among the country's most visited historic monuments. For a sense of the its medieval past, take a guided tour through the courtyards, towers, dungeons, and grand halls, packed with period furniture and artwork. Although many visitors choose to take the bus or even walk here from the nearby town of Monteux, you can also reach the castle by hopping on one of the lake's many guided boat excursions. Where to stay in Montreux

Kick back and enjoy the millionaire lifestyle in Montreux, where luxury and lavishness are always in style. Along the lakefront promenade you'll find a multitude of pricey four- and five-star hotels to retreat to in this Swiss Riviera vacation spot. A number of guesthouses and bed and breakfasts are also available for the more down-to-earth traveler. "Budget" isn't exactly in Montreux's vocabulary, however, for more affordable accommodations look southeast to the neighboring town of Vevey.

  • You can see basically every room which is impressive. It's also a bit rough around the edges as the creators intended, so it's nice to see the difference when compared to something immaculate like Nieuwschanstein castle. You could get audio guides but you can get a little pamphlet explaining each room plus some text in the rooms which was enough for us.
  • Really neat experience being able to have open access to at least 80% of the castle. Also being able to explore the grounds at your own pace and spend extra time in the areas that are of personal interest is an added bonus.
  • Amazing medieval castle that has an interesting history, lots of areas to explore and will keep both young and older members of the family busy for hours! Worth a trip if you are in Montreux or surrounding areas. Also, bring your pass from the hotel to get a discount! Totally worth the trip and entrance fee... find the dungeon where the prisoners are kept!
  • The place is tourist ready, everything is accessible, but not for handicap. Places with furniture that you can touch. They have suvinier store, a small snack bar and free WiFi. Beautiful place for pictures.
  • Beautiful castle ~10 minute bike ride from Montreux. The entrance fee is low, 10chf, but the chateu is large enough to use an entire afternoon to explore. If you are in the area, make sure to stop by. Also, their white wine (made in house) was delightful.
